9/17/14: Delaware City & DDC, Nun Run, Lori Loco, Iron Hill, Injury Prevention

Delaware City, site of the Delaware Distance Classic
This year the 15k and 5k will be in Delaware City. I know they would like to make the race the Delaware City Distance Classic. They’ve gone all out to make this a great race and a wonderful after party! You can make a day of it. No need to eat and run, I mean, run, eat and run.

Delaware City has long been known for Fort Delaware (Wikipedia) and Fort DuPont (Wikipedia), defenses used from the Civil War in to World War II. Fort Mott in New Jersey provided the third part of the defense triangle. There is a Confederate graveyard near Fort Mott, where prisoners that had been kept at Fort Delaware were buried. Yet there is so much more to this city.

Delaware City’s Historic District is in its 31st year of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places with over 200 structures! You can see many architectural styles throughout the city, from the Federal style of the 1820’s and the uniquely-Delaware Italianate “Peach House” buildings of the 1850’s. (Taken from the Delaware City Main Street web page.)

Delaware City is also home to the Diamond State Base Ball Club, a club dedicated to playing baseball the way it used to be played in the 1860’s and 1870’s (when Wilmington had a team with the same name — yes, there was baseball in Wilmington before the Blue Rocks). The club made it to the championships last year but were narrowly defeated, 4-3. (No word on if those scores are adjusted for inflation. How much was a run worth back in 1860?)

Adding to that are new additions like Crabby Dick’s restaurant (site of the after party) and the recently-opened, delightfully-named Lewinsky’s on Clinton. (Come back on Thursdays for Blue Dress Night!) The latter opened in July but was recently featured in the News Journal. (Apologies in advance if the News Journal’s pay wall makes the article inaccessible to you.) (On the Main Street site there is a listing for Buster Nutt’s Pub and Provisions. That name was changed to Lewinsky’s on Clinton. The address is the same, 92 Clinton Street.)

At Battery Park you can see Fort Delaware, Pea Patch Island and the Jersey Shore. (Pea Patch Island is, of course, the origin of the phrase “Get your pea-pickin’ hands off me!” I might have made that up. Come to the race and find out!) It’s a beautiful view of the Delaware River and shows how important the city was to protecting the state in times of war. (I like Delaware’s park better. In New York City all you can see from Battery Park is some lady holding a tablet and a torch.)

Merchants Row has many unique restaurants and shops just waiting to delight you and tickle your taste buds until they cry “Uncle!”.

There are also many events and festivals in the town. Delaware City Day has been celebrated every year since 1980. It’s held at Battery Park and is another reason Delaware’s park is superior. (I mean, really. What can you do in New York City’s park but look at the lady? Maybe try some of that salsa they mention in the TV commercials but that’s it.) Delaware City teams up with New Castle to host the River Towns Ride and Festival, a time-trial bike race and festivals in each town.

Last but not least is the Delaware City-Salem Ferry, a ferry between Delaware City and Salem, New Jersey. That site also has a lot of info on the history, shops and entertainment available in Delaware City. And you thought it was a one-horse town, with the forts being the main attraction? Shame on you! Come to the Delaware Distance Classic and see why we chose to hold the race in Delaware City.

This week and for the next few weeks we’re highlighting the Delaware Distance Classic on October 12th, the 32nd annual running of the 15k. A 5k was added several years ago but the 15k is the real test. This year we have a new location in Delaware City. We will get to explore this city on the rise and the new Mike Castle Trail!

Lori Culnane is special enough to get her own item. She ran FIFTY MILES on Saturday! No wonder she is lovingly called Loco!

Included is a reminder about the PCVRC fundraising event at Iron Hill Brewery on Main Street in Newark on September 29th. Attached is the coupon to print out ahead of time and bring to the event. Please, DO NOT hand out coupons on the premises as Iron Hill will cancel the event.

Paula Jermyn’s Speaker Series event is included. Please RSVP ASAP (PDQ, etc.) as the actual event can only he done with 20 people. More are welcome to come but they will only be able to spectate and not get an evaluation from Duncan. Reserve your spot now!

Nun Run Summary
Ray Christensen put on another successful Nun Run with 550+ registered and 508 finishers! If you didn’t run you can still donate to the Jeanne Jugan House (put “Nun Run” in the comments area) to help them purchase a medical transport van.

Special thanks go to Rich Szymanski for being the lead bike, Audrey Diotale, Lenora Wagner, Jerry Herman, Paula Jermyn and everyone else who helped out!

Claire was busy this weekend supporting Lori on her run (including running the last 15 miles with Lori, taking lots of pictures and keeping us posted on Facebook!) but I will get an update on how the table went for the next newsletter.
Great job Ray! Races2Run should hire you!

Lori Culnane, Runner Extra-Extraordinaire!
Lori Culnane ran fifty miles this past Saturday as part of the North Face Endurance Challenge in Kettle Moraine, WI. (Finisher badge) Lori’s husband John, Claire Neilan and Paula Jermyn all went out to support Lori. On Facebook Lori said some of the best parts of the race were seeing her awesome crew at various points along the course. Claire even ran the last 15 miles with Lori! Lori finished in a blazing 10:28:40, a 12:35 per-mile pace. Awesome job Lori! Just add a 5k and you’ll have done just over a double-marathon!

Note Dean Karnazes’ autograph on Lori’s shirt. I want to see Dean’s shirt. It better have Lori’s autograph on it!

Race Results, Reviews and Accomplishments:
Pike Creek continues to field competitive athletes. Let’s see how we did!

Jim Durkin ran the Fifth Avenue Mile in NYC this past Saturday, finishing in 7:45. Some guys will do anything to pass the time while their wives shop at Saks.

Jim Durkin also competed on Sunday in the Delaware Senior Olympics held at Delaware State University in Dover. He competed in five events and took no less than silver for his age group in each event and won gold in the 800m run!

John Schultz did the Double Trouble Trail Run (sponsored by Double Bubble gum?), running 15k in 2:45:33. That was 19 minutes faster than last year! Watch out DDC field, John’s gunning for you!

Lee Dresser competed in the Diamondman Half-Ironman race on September 6th, finishing in 6:07. It was his first ever half-Ironman (swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles) and only his 2nd triathlon AND he won his age group! Wonderful work Lee!

Carole Feole, the day before the April Fools Half Marathon last April, competed in the Shore Medical Center 7k, finishing 3rd overall in 31:27, a 7:18 per-mile pace! (There was a 7k and an 11k race. I have a potential sponsor in mind for next year.)

In more recent news Carole Feole competed in the Coombs/Douglas Memorial Bay [not Day] Run this past August, completing five miles in 37:01, winning her age group. Her 7:24 per-mile pace was only 6 seconds slower per mile than April. Great consistency Carole! She also would have gotten an age group state record if the race had renewed their certification!

Dan Suher was the overall winner at the Nun Run. John Costello was Male Master’s Champ and Kristen Stump was 2nd Overall Female. Way to represent PCVRC! (Results taken from Ray’s Facebook post. If you are not included below please e-mail me and you will be included next week.)

Nun Run Volunteers Needed
Ray Christensen needs volunteers for the race itself. He needs course marshals (8:30-10 am), Please e-mail if you can help.

Claire Neilan is looking for volunteers to man the PCVRC table at the Nun Run. You would need to be there at 7:30 when registration opens to set up the table and talk about the club. Claire will provide you with brochures, leaflets, registration forms and a mannequin. (I guess the mannequin is so you’ll have someone to talk to during the race. ) Please e-mail Claire at if you can help so she can arrange to drop things off. Thanks!

Apologies for the delay. I re-injured my foot on Monday and have been dealing with that. Last week I got to accomplish a bucket-list item, walking on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Rachel has an item about a PCVRC fundraising event at Iron Hill Brewery in Newark on September 29th.

Paula Jermyn has the next event in the PCVRC Speaker Series, to be held on October 19th. It’s a great opportunity to stretch and unwind from the DDC the week prior!

Robert Taggart would like to pass around a reminder to be careful out in the sun and use sunscreen even when you think it’s not needed. He has gone through 3 basal skin cancer surgeries in the last two months and would hate to see anyone else have to go through what he has.

Race Results, Reviews and accomplishments:
Pike Creek continues to field competitive athletes. Let’s see how we did!

Don Ropp, Susan Snavely, Tony Chelpaty, Barbara Chelpaty, Kim Sinko-Borges, Sheri Sweigart and Dirk Sweigart competed in the Lehigh Valley Health Network Via Marathon and Half-Marathon on Sunday. Dirk got a PR and came in 4th Overall Master’s in the half. Sheri won her age group in the half!

Theresa Cannon-Kauffman competed in the Nation’s Triathlon, an Olympic-distance triathlon in Washington, D.C. It was her first race at this distance in over 20 years. The swim portion was cancelled but Theresa placed 7th in her age group, finishing in 2:10:03. Well done!

John Schultz competed in the Labor Pain 12-Hour Endurance Trail Race (just the name makes me wince) on August 31st. He completed 35 miles in 11:16:12, 13 minutes faster than last year! John describes the race as completing as many 5-mile loops in 12 hours. John completed seven loops in “a steam bath, with two heavy showers”. Rank is determined by number of loops and then finishing times. In this case John’s 35 miles/11:16:12 beat out someone else’s 30 miles/9:15:06! John placed 86th out of 214 finishers. Awesome job John!

Carole Feole, at the April Fools Half Marathon on April 6th, won the 50-59 age group and set the Delaware women’s 55-59 state record!!!!!

Kelly Jones, Matt Cutrona, Zach Chupa and Lisa & Fred Jalot competed in the Bottle & Cork Ten-Miler and 5k races. Matt won the Overall Master’s in the Ten-Miler. Kelly Jones won her age group in the 5k and Lisa Jalot won Overall Female in the 5k. Fred Jalot came in 2nd in his age group in the 5k. Zach Chupa was the Overall Male winner. Way to go ladies and gentlemen!

Lynn Knothe and Greg Cauller both competed in the 15th Amos Herr 5k Honey Run on August 24th. Lynn was the Overall Female winner and Greg won his age group!

John Schultz competed in the Diamondman Challenge Sprint Duathlon on September 7th. He ran 2 miles, biked 19.5 and then ran 3.3 more, all in a time of 2:53:00, winning his age group! Most impressive John! (I keep saying I need to start registering as an 80-year-old so I can win awards. The happy truth is that John would still beat me handily!)

8/21/14: Radnor Steeplechase, HAC Run, Pizza Run, Green Turtle

Radnor Red Run Results
PCVRC fielded 10 runners for Sunday’s Radnor Steeplechase 5k. See the bulletin I sent this morning for details and pictures. (Pictures provided by Sheri Sweigart.)

From Tom Steenkamer:
This past Sunday, 8/17, the PCVRC USATF off-road team competed in the Radnor 5k Steeplechase. 10 club members answered the call for team support at the race held on the grounds of the Radnor Hunt Club in nearby Malvern, PA.

The rolling grounds of the Radnor Hunt Club present a unique challenge to competitors. The 5k grass course is routed around the pastures, over wooden jumps and through water pits that are used for horse events.

The course routing, number and types of obstacles vary from year to year. This year’s opening ¾-mile was obstacle free, letting the field stretch out and then the horse jumps began. The wooden obstacles varied in height from 1 to 3 feet.

Also included in the fun are a number of water pits. This year the first pit was more mud than water and the second pit was used twice. The first time through Water Pit #2 you entered from the shallow end and had to jump out. A few obstacles later you reentered the pit with a plunge into the deep end.

Led out by the strong start by Dan Suher (5th overall) the club had a record point scoring and awards day! Collecting the famed Horse Bobble-Butt Age Group awards: Meg Hain 2nd, Lynn Knothe 2nd, Sheri Sweigart 2nd, Dan Suher 1st, Greg Cauller 2nd, Tom Steenkamer 2nd, Bob Klezsics 3rd and John Schultz 1st. Special thanks go to Dirk Sweigart and Jim Durkin for contributing.

In the USATF competition PCVRC was the 1st Place team for the day. PCVRC retains 3rd-place position in the season long club competition.

Post-race festivities were hosted by our friends from the South Jersey-based Pineland Striders who once again put on a fabulous spread. Good times could not be dampened by the slight sprinkle that fell over the parking lot or perhaps it was the extensive supply of fresh craft beers . Don’t turn down a sample of Southern Tier’s Crème Brulee Stout if you ever get the chance.

The trail series resumes on October 19th in Collegeville PA @ the Evansburg Challenge. Thanks your continued support of the USATF series.

It is very unlikely the Howard M. Laws Team Night race will be rescheduled. We should have heard by now and kids are returning to school. Hope to see you at a race next year!

I had fun racing in Saturday’s Inaugural Breast Fest 5k and then course-marshaling at Sunday’s Greene Turtle 5k/10k in Lewes. The poor 10k racers had to see me four times since I was posted at a key intersection. Great job everyone!

Race Results, Reviews and Accomplishments
Pike Creek continues to field competitive athletes. Let’s see how we did!

Andy Jakubowitch won the Greene Turtle 5k on Sunday, finishing in a blazing-fast 17:45.5! I’m sure he can put the wooden flip-flop award to good use.

Erin Graves won the women’s division at the Greene Turtle 5k, finishing in 21:30.3. Both results are more impressive in that they had to race in a larger crowd, since the 10k was going on at the same time. It’s hard to make sure you’re only competing with people in the same race you are.

Lee Kaufman won his age group at the Greene Turtle 10k AND was the 7th overall finisher, finishing in 44:55.9!

Mike Piorkowski
was literally right behind Lee, coming in 2nd in his age group and 8th overall finisher. Mike finished in 45:19.4!

Inaugural Breast Fest
(August 16th – Dewey Beach, DE)

Mark DeNio 53:18.9

Greene Turtle 5k
(August 17th – Lewes, DE)

Andy Jakubowitch 17:45.5 (1st Overall Male)
Erin Graves 21:30.3 (1st Overall Female)

Greene Turtle 10k
(August 17th – Lewes, DE)

Lee Kaufman 44:55.9 (1st AG)
Mike Piorkowski 45:19.4 (2nd AG)

USATF
Calling all XC runners:

Looking ahead on the 2014 USATF calendar we have a unique opportunity to participate in the USATF Club National Cross Country Championships this fall. This is an annual event that rotates locations around the US. This year the XC championships will be hosted by our local Mid Atlantic USATF organization at the Lehigh University cross country course on 12/13/14. The scoring is standard cross country format (order of finish) counting the finish place of the top 5 runners from each club. Races will be scored in 10 year age groups. I hope to build upon the fun and success our men’s 50 yr. old team had last year at the USATF Masters XC championships. We want to support men’s and women’s teams in the 40 and 50 year old competitions. We need a minimum of 5 in each age group to participate as a team. (I would love to field open teams (under 40) as well!)

Looking to hear from all the harriers out there soon!

8/12/14: Radnor Steeplechase, BBQ Pics, HAC Plunge & Run

Radnor Red Run Steeplechase 5k
I was asked to send a special edition about the Radnor Red Run Steeplechase 5k (say that five times fast!). This is not your usual 5k in that there are several obstacles including a water jump! Please go and enjoy yourselves just don’t wear your best (or newest) pair of shoes!

All ages are welcome and online registration closes tonight. (Day-of registration will be available.) You don’t have to be a USATF member to participate but that is how Pike Creek gets to compete as a team with a team score. Pike Creek also gets money back at the end of the year that allows us to fund memberships for runners who participate in four or more USATF events a year. (See the Pike Creek Valley Running Club Membership Fee Structure and Renewal Policy item below.)

Please RSVP to Tom Steenkamer at to let him know if you can participate as a USATF runner. You must be a current USATF member to be included in the team score.

Race Results, Reviews and Accomplishments:
Had some good results this week and fun pictures!

John Schultz placed 2nd in his age group at the Half-Wit Half Marathon Trail Race on Sunday, finishing in 4:19:31! The race is difficult. As John put it, “Very hilly. Lots of rocks and roots. One of the ‘attractions’ is 128 crumbling stone steps up a hillside.” Better you than me, John!

Jim Durkin competed in the Musikfest 4-miler point-to-point on August 4th, finishing in 38:39. It started at Canal Park in Allentown and followed the towpath of the Delaware & Lehigh Canal. (I might be doing the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Half-Marathon in November. I wonder if that covers any of the same ground?)

Theresa Cannon-Kauffman participated last evening in the last running this year of the High Peaks Cyclery Monday Night Mini-Triathlons in Lake Placid, NY. She swam 400 yards, biked 12 miles and did a 3-mile run in 1:19:01, placing 3rd in her age group! Sounds like good practice for St. Andrew’s Sprint-Tri next year. She swam in Mirror Lake, site of the swim portion of the Ironman race. I sense a race in her future!

From Tom Steenkamer:

It’s that time again the last USATF off-road event of the summer is this Sunday, 8/17, @ the Radnor hunt club. The Radnor 5k Steeplechase race time is 9AM and day of registration is available. NOTE to all USATF members : I have received only 1 confirmation at this time – we need 5 competitors to score at this event.
