Becky Yencharis, a PCVRC Hall of Famer and our oldest member, is 96 years young and will be 97 on July 20th. You’re all invited to her birthday party that day. Details below.

Becky did her first 5k in 1982 at the St. Anthony’s Italian Festival 5k. She enjoyed it so much she made sure to attend every running since! This year was her 32nd consecutive appearance. She has been there for 32 of the race’s 35 years.

Here she is finishing this year’s race. (She does a block or so but that is very inspiring to see her determination.)

Please come to the Iron Hill Brewery on the Wilmington Riverfront on July 20th. Stop by for a drink or join in a full meal. Your choice but your presence is welcome! (Guests purchase their own food and drink please.) RSVP is not necessary but appreciated so the organizers know what size room they’ll need. See you there!

USATF Spring 2014 update:

The PCVRC USATF race team has just completed the spring season of Mid Atlantic club competition.

In the Grand Prix challenge (road race series) PCVRC fielded teams in all 5 of the spring races. Highlights from the spring series include a 2nd place team finish at the season opener Adrenaline 5k in Haddonfield NJ, 1st place team finishes at the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon, Valley Forge 5 miler, and the Moorestown 8k. PCVRC currently leads all clubs in the Grand Prix series heading into the summer break. We will reconvene in October for the Delaware Distance Classic.

We also fielded teams in the Mid Atlantic Off-Road series (trail) this spring. The most recent race was held on 6/7 on Forbidden Dr. in Philadelphia. PCVRC managed to do some last minute race day recruiting to complete our team roster. While we finished 4th for the day in the Wissahickon 10k PCVRC continues to hang on to 3rd place in the team standings after competing in all 4 trail events this spring. Special thanks to Andrea Rubinoff for her team building efforts.

The off-road series continues over the summer with a trail race in July and August. If you enjoy running on the local trail systems here in Delaware please consider coming out to join our trail team for a future event. All that is required is the will to finish and a current USATF membership.

In addition to the club challenge competition the USATF series provides individual age group competition (5yr age groups for the road, 10yr age groups for trail).

PCVRC is well represented at the half way point of the season.

Congratulations to all competitors for an outstanding spring and thank you for making the USATF series part of your race calendar.

Calling all XC runners:

Looking ahead on the 2014 USATF calendar we have a unique opportunity to participate in the USATF Club National Cross Country Championships this fall. This is an annual event that rotates locations around the US. This year the XC championships will be hosted by our local Mid Atlantic USTAF organization at the Lehigh University cross country course on 12/13/14. The scoring is standard cross country format (order of finish) counting the finish place of the top 5 runners from each club. Races will be scored in 10 year age groups. I hope to build upon the fun and success our men’s 50 yr. old team had last year at the USATF Masters XC championships. We want to support men’s and women’s teams in the 40 and 50 year old competitions. We need a minimum of 5 in each age group to participate as a team. (I would love to field open teams (under 40) as well!)

Looking to hear from all the harriers out there soon!

Planning ahead? Think Philly and Rothman

6/10/14: Renewal Policy, C25K Graduates, Howard Laws, Winners

Apologies for the delay. The newsletter will now come out on Tuesdays. Peoples’ accomplishments can be celebrated sooner and people will have more time to prepare for upcoming events.

Many thanks to Rich & Tricia Szymanski for a wonderful evening at last Thursday’s Crabowitz! Even though the 5k is informal that course is no joke. More details below.

Paula Jermyn put on a successful Yoga for Runners event and has already had calls to repeat it. Watch this space for a future announcement.

Special congratulations to the Spring 2014 C25k class who did their first race at the St. Anthony’s Italian Festival 5k! It was also great to see so many returnees from previous classes as well as Darlise, Paula and Stacey come out to run with the new graduates!

There have been many questions about fees, renewal dates and deadlines so please read this item. You can also find it on the website at http://www.pcvrc.com/join.php

6th Annual Crabowitz Recap From Rich:
A huge Thank You to our generous friends who donated $1700 for the The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation at the 6th annual Crabowitz!

We would also like to thank our own Tony BBQ for making and supplying our Rebel Ale again this year as well as Darlise, Wes and Frank’s Wines who also contributed beer!

Another successful Crabowitz is in the books and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Spring 2014 C25k
Thanks to the hard work of the coaches another class graduated to running their first race! The returnees from previous sessions improved their own running and encouraged the newcomers. The graduates ran their first race this past Sunday at the St. Anthony’s Italian Festival 5k. Quite a group!

We are also continuing the tradition of collecting donations for the B+ Foundation. The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the life of 14-year-old Andrew who battled leukemia and sepsis. Andrew’s B+ blood type became the perfect message – Be Positive – to reflect how Andrew lived his life and how he inspired others to do the same. The B+ Foundation is about kids helping kids fight cancer. We do this by providing financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer and by providing childhood cancer research grants.

Thanks and looking forward to another great event!

Seminar Series – Yoga For Runners Workshop
Announcing the next entry in our Seminar Series! Please RSVP to Paula Jermyn at .
WHAT: Yoga for Runners

WHEN: June, 9th @ 6:30PM-7:45PM
WHERE: Hockessin Activity Center (Located right inside the PAL on Lancaster Pike)

WHO: This is a special workshop as part of our speaker series, however, non PCVRC friends and family can also participate for a small donation of $5. We are looking forward to a great turn out!

Running and yoga go together like peanut butter and jelly. If you are tight, sore, stressed, or just looking to clear your mind for a more focused training season, yoga may be the right thing for you.

What the heck is yoga anyway? Do we have to wear trendy clothes and bend ourselves into pretzels? Absolutely not. Yoga, like running, can be simple and effective with minimal equipment.
Yoga is an ancient practice that began in India. Physically, it can help you become stronger, and more flexible. Mentally, it can improve concentration and relieve stress. The breath in yoga is what links the mental and physical together. This “mind/ body connection” can help an athlete to feel more present and healthy in their sport.

If you think you’re too tight for yoga, think again. This workshop is tailored specifically for runners. It begins with a short introduction, breath work, and a series of beginner-friendly postures to strengthen and stretch the muscles. We will focus specifically on:
-Injury prevention
-Safe Alignment
-Core stability
-Stress relief for muscles and mind

It ends in a guided relaxation to leave you feeling calm and refreshed. Come give it a try!

Bring an exercise mat and bottle of water. Comfortable clothes are important. Keep in mind that inversions (forward folds) will have you upside down so fitted shirts can be easier than very baggy ones. Stretching ropes/straps are helpful if you are very tight.

Race Results, Reviews and Accomplishments
Here’s what’s been sent in…

Stacey Schiller would like it known, by one and all, that she turned in a PR of 26:47 at the Highway One Pictures 5K on Memorial Day, trouncing hubby Joel by nearly a minute. His response: “The King is Dead. Long Live the Queen!”

Theresa Cannon-Kauffman smoked it yet again, winning her age group at the YMCA Memorial Day 10k in Fredericksburg, VA, finishing in 49:32!

A little personal gloating from your editor. I won the Clydesdale Master 226-and-up division at the 21st Masser 5-Miler on May 25th, making me the Delaware state champion! Granted I was the only one in the division but I showed up and did the work, turning in a PR of 1:23:19.

Andy Jakubowitch won the 12th Highway One Pictures 5k on Memorial Day, finishing in 17:23.1, beating his time a week before by over half a minute! YAY for flat courses.

Doug White set an age group course record at the Highway One Pictures 5k, finishing in 24:32!

Due to so many people participating in both the Masser 5-miler and the Highway One Pictures 5k I have searched the results. If you are not listed, please accept my apologies and let me know. You will be highlighted in next week’s bulletin or a special edition if one is published.

21st Masser 5-Miler (May 25th)
David Farren 35:23.6 (3rd AG)
Kelly Jones 38:19.3 (2nd AG)

We have heard from newcomers they decided not to come because only a couple people RSVP’ed so they thought the event would be sparsely attended. Monday’s C25k session had over 20 people!

Click the Meetup logo above or down in the “Links for Members” section. The link will be included in the “Links for Members” section in each E-Bulletin.
