Seminar Series – Yoga for Runners
Announcing the next entry in our Seminar Series! Please RSVP to Paula Jermyn at .

Yoga for Runners Workshop
WHAT: Yoga for Runners
WHEN: June, 9th @ 6:30PM-7:45PM

WHERE: Hockessin Activity Center (Located right inside the PAL on Lancaster Pike)

HOW MUCH: Free to PCVRC members, $5 to non-members. Friends and family welcome

Running and yoga go together like peanut butter and jelly. If you are tight, sore, stressed, or just looking to clear your mind for a more focused training season, yoga may be the right thing for you.

What the heck is yoga anyway? Do we have to wear trendy clothes and bend ourselves into pretzels? Absolutely not. Yoga, like running, can be simple and effective with minimal equipment.
Yoga is an ancient practice that began in India. Physically, it can help you become stronger, and more flexible. Mentally, it can improve concentration and relieve stress. The breath in yoga is what links the mental and physical together. This “mind/ body connection” can help an athlete to feel more present and healthy in their sport.

If you think you’re too tight for yoga, think again. This workshop is tailored specifically for runners. It begins with a short introduction, breath work, and a series of beginner-friendly postures to strengthen and stretch the muscles. We will focus specifically on:
-Injury prevention
-Safe Alignment
-Core stability
-Stress relief for muscles and mind

It ends in a guided relaxation to leave you feeling calm and refreshed. Come give it a try!

Bring an exercise mat and bottle of water. Comfortable clothes are important. Keep in mind that inversions (forward folds) will have you upside down so fitted shirts can be easier than very baggy ones. Stretching ropes/straps are helpful if you are very tight.

5/3/14: Newsletter Editor, Philly Marathon Events

New Newsletter Editor
Greetings from your new newsletter editor, Mark DeNio! I hope to fill the shoes of David McCorquodale and Dirk Sweigart and carry on what they built. (At least I know I’ll leave big shoes to fill. That’s one good thing from wearing 13/4E.)

Just a quick word of introduction. I have been racing for three years now but still walk 99% of the time. Delaware last year was my first half-marathon and next week will be my fourth! This fall I plan on re-joining the C25k group and start running races finally. I really appreciate PCVRC’s welcoming me even though I walk. It is great to see a running club bring all kinds of people in and give them support to start running.

As before please send in any race results you want highlighted (PR, first time, course record, etc.). This is the best way to make sure your results are included. I and others are watching Facebook and the usual race sites but it’s certainly possible to miss someone and we don’t want to do that. One of the beauties of this group is there are so many members with such varied race locations it’s hard to keep track of everyone’s activities.

Garden Spot Valley Half-Marathon Race Recap (Mark DeNio)
I went with Betty Olmstead and we drove up Rt. 202 instead of the usual Rt. 41 from Hockessin. We took Rt. 30 then Rt. 100 as if we were going to the Turnpike then we got on Rt. 322. That took us right into New Holland and near the race site. It took about an hour. I had a mental picture of the Lancaster area being much further away, probably because I would drive down from north Wilmington to Rt. 41 and then “up.”

At the race site we ran into Chrissy Hower, she is a “half fanatic” who only started running two years ago. She’s so accomplished now that she ran the Bucks County half the next day! I still walk and there was NO WAY I was contemplating doing a half the next day. Chrissy, Betty and I hung out as a group for the pre- and post-race festivities.

This was a VERY well-organized race. There were rows of porta-potties and attendants calling out when one became available. The registration tent could have been better organized simply because the pick-up was by bib number not name. Luckily I remembered mine but wondered how other people coped. There was a runner recovery tent that turned out to be food and drink not massage and other things. (The race mentioned showers and a hot tub available.)

At the start it took me over a minute to cross the mats since there were 1200+ racers. The course was well marked and I was never alone for long especially once I got to the out-and-back part of the course. Lots of hills and inclines but nothing killer. The “killer” hill was a short, steep hill we had the pleasure to go down first on the way out to the turnaround. I have other candidates for the killer hill. Each mile marker was painted on the ground as well as with a sign. The miles were painted in yellow until the distances differed then the half was painted in dark blue. Sometimes that made the marks a little hard to see but the signs helped.

Afterward all the food and drink in the recovery tent was free and even the spectators’ food court offered a free entree and drinks to the racers. Hats and shirts from this and previous years’ races were on sale. If there was an expo the night before there was no sign of it the next day. (It may have been in the registration tent like Delaware but I didn’t explore. I had to get back to the car and get geared up before the race. The tent wasn’t nearly as large as Delaware’s though.)

Another tent offered massages but there was a long waiting list by the time I finished and could sign up. I waited an hour or so and got my turn. Many thanks to Betty for letting me know about the sign up and suggesting I go do it before I finished eating and recovering. One thing EVERY race needs to do better is communicate what options are available to runners and how to access them.

All-in-all, it was a great day. I set a personal best, saw old friends and made a new one! I will definitely consider doing this race again. Now off to the Delaware Marathon Running Festival on Mother’s Day!

USATF
Race Recap for Tyler Arboretum and upcoming “double jeopardy” weekend
(Tom Steenkamer)

Last weekend the USATF off-road season resumed with the annual run through the Tyler Arboretum grounds in nearby Media, PA. The Tyler Arboretum 10k has become local favorite with trail running enthusiasts and this year was no exception. Once again the race reached its registration capacity selling out five weeks prior to race day. Thankfully the USATF trail coordinator and race director were receptive to our late request to field a full race team for this event.

Noted for its wide trails, rolling terrain and four minor stream crossings the Tyler 10k is a fun test for beginners as well as accomplished trail racers. PCVRC had ten runners complete the race. We received great support from our ladies at this event with three of the four finishing in the top six club age-graded scores.

43:40 TOM STEENKAMER 73.24 336.66
37:45 JOSH LOREN 71.95
44:41 PAUL RANDOLPH 67.08
49:45 LISA JALOT 64.32
50:33 JEN LOREN 60.07
1: 02:57 LORRI FENCER 56.58
50:10 CHRIS JAMES 56.21
53:23 SANG LIM 51.70
1: 41:30 JOHN SCHULTZ 44.20
2: 00.24 BETTY OLMSTEAD 36.69

In the club competition Greater Philly led the way based on the strong performances from their 50-year men (swept top three in the age group), second was Rosemont followed by PCVRC.
