10/3/12: DDC/B+ Weekend, BBC Fundraiser, Dogfish Dash 5K, World Record

From President Ray
“DDC / B+ Weekend” Activities
When PCVRC and The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation decided to promote each other, we realized that we could link several activities to become a “weekend of events”. Today’s News Journal article explains one of them. Besides noting Hugh Campbell’s record-setting performance last weekend (that will be recognized at DDC), it highlights an interesting event Saturday. See today’s NewsJournal article at http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20121003/SPORTS1101/310030053/Suro-charts-own-triathlon-course?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Sports for info on Eric Suro’s Ironman Tri B+ fundraiser on Saturday right here in the Newark area.

But the weekend activities kick off with:

Guest Bartender at BBC Thursday 10/4
Mark your calendars for October 4th from 6-9pm to join us at the BBC Tavern and Grill! BBC will be hosting a “Guest Bartender Night” along with the SceneTap B+ Racing Team (our 5k race sponsor) to help raise money to fight childhood cancer. You can meet our partners as well as participate in a live auction for some fabulous racing inspired items. For more information please call Jim Steele (302) 530-7274 or visit www.bepositive.org We’ll be recruiting more runners and volunteers for Sunday’s DDC.

DDC 15K & 5K Volunteers Still Needed
Delaware Distance Classic is just days away. We’ve got 300 already registered for 15K and just a handful for 5K. If not running one of the events, we could really, really use your help. Nearly twice as many are needed due to the 2 concurrent events.

To volunteer, please reply or contact one of the following (double duty is welcome):

– Registration (meet at 6:45am): Rachel B.

– Course Marshals (meet at 8:00am): Vince M.

– Finish area/food tables (starting 8:15am): Dave M.

DDC is Rain or Shine Event!
Race day regisration starts at 7am Sunday. Pre-registered people will receive info email today. Invite friends to run or walk the 5K for decent chance at age-group medal since this is an inaugural race! Race day prices are:
$40 for 15K and $25 for 5K. Shirts for all. Party for all.

The 5K starts first, at 8:30am, followed immediately by the 15K. 15K runners should gather near the start inside the parking lot until the 5K runners pass by. 5K runners should proceed to their start, 200 yards down the third base side of the stadium. Volunteers will direct you. As soon as last 5K participants are clear, you’ll be invited to come to start line. Course maps will be posted and also at www.pcvrc.com/ddccourse.php

5K Age Group Record for Hugh Campbell
Hugh Campbell shattered his own record and set a new standard for age-group in an age-grade world record run on Sunday at the National Masters 5K Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. He had previously set a new standard at the Miles for Melanoma 5K on the Wilmington Riverfront a couple weeks ago with a time of 27:17. Sunday he broke through and knocked another 32 seconds off to run 26:45.

As Hugh told me, before the race, the people at the Festival of Races thought he was just another old runner, competing for an age-group win. Afterward, having run a race that age-graded above 100 – 101.93 to be exact – he became a celebrity. Naomi Campbell told me that they really enjoyed the time at the event and that all of the runners were “so welcoming”.

Here are several links to articles from Syracuse:

This is a link to the Men’s Results: http://www.usatf.org/Events—Calendar/2012/USA-Masters-5-km-Championships/Results/Men-Age-Graded.aspx

Hugh Campbell intends to be present to watch the events and MA-USATF will honor his achievement before the awards ceremony for the races.

Funny Running Moment: Eliza Tibbetts, the women’s winner of the Maine Marathon, which was run this past weekend in Portland, literally worked up a lather while winning in 3:03:50. Apparently when her running shorts were last laundered, she used too much detergent. With the race being run in a persistent drizzle, after 20 miles a white foam began to appear on her legs, which persisted through the finish. While having her picture taken, wearing the laurel wreath of the victor, Tibbetts quipped, “Well, this kind of ruins the Kodak moment.”

From Lynn Knothe:

Club members Enos Benbow, Greg Cauller, Lisa Jalot, Darlise DiMatteo and myself all participated in the Dogfish Dash 5K on Sunday. (If I missed anyone, I apologize). Enos was second overall in the 10K in 34:49 and Lisa was second female and first master in the 10K in 42:12. Greg and I were overall winners in the 5k in 18:08 and 19:58, respectively. We all had the incentive of Dogfish brews at the post race party to run a little bit faster!

21:37 Sheri Herrmann, 3rd Overall Female and 2nd Master

From Doctor Dan (Weintraub) or it is now Banana Dan (or Danana Bananarama?):

Saturday, Chris James ran a 3:41 marathon at the Rock N Roll Denver half and full marathon. He experienced the effects of the high altitude as well as a nagging cold, but the weather and the course through the parks and neighborhoods of Denver were really nice and motivating. His performance was definitely admirable. I think he was the only Delawarean who ran the race.

As reigning PCVRC Spirit Award winner, I, of course, signed up at the expo to volunteer for the race. Although I had only been in Colorado less than two days and knew very little about the race, I was placed at the Solutions tent at 5 AM. I helped with the bib distribution to all the runners who were picking it up on the day of the race. After the start, I was assigned to the finish area where I became Banana Dan and gave out bananas to all the finishers of both races who wanted one. I enjoyed being part of this race. The Denver RNR production was very well done.

Bethany Beach Duathlon – From Claire Neilan:
We had some PCVRC folks represent the club at the Bethany Beach duathlon and triathlon this past Sunday. Myself, Tom Jermyn, and Dan Simmons competed in the duathlon. And Jordan competed in the triathlon. I got 5th overall female (they gave awards for the top 5 men and women), and Tom and Dan won their age groups. Both Jordan and I rode 75 miles the day before at Bike to the Bay, so we were very happy with our times. Jordan was using it as a practice event for his upcoming half ironman in October.

Brandywine Bend trail run – From Tom Steenkamer:

The 2nd annual Brandywine Bend trail run was held this past Sunday in Chadds Ford, PA. This race is an invitational event that is held on private lands (Weymouth, DuPont) in the Brandywine valley just south of Chadds Ford. The property is tucked into a corner of the Brandywine (aka – “the Bend”). Access to the property is a scenic adventure unto itself via a 2 mile gravel driveway passing a few homes, barns, horse pastures ending at the rustic main house on the Bend property.

The 7.8 mile course covered a mix of farm roads softened by the overnight rain, a few significant hill climbs, a meadow maze, some single track and finally a crossing of the Brandywine to the finish.

Several club members participated in this unique event which featured a starting format modeled after the famed San Francisco Dip Sea race. Runners started in waves based on age and gender. The first wave (oldest age group) received a 20 minute head start over the last group. (20-24 yr. old males).

It was the perfect morning for a trail chase and we set out to catch those who started before us. The splashed our way through the farm roads saturated from the overnight rain and hit the first significant hill climb arrived at mile 2, followed by a downhill recovery. We proceeded around the pastures, past the chapel in the woods, took a spiral course through the wildflower maze and headed down along the river to Smith Bridge. Mile 5 provided another challenging but short hill which seemed close to the finish. Much to my surprise it was followed by an even steeper, and longer hill climb at mile 6.5 up to Point Lookout. History says this is the location where General Washington scouted the area planning for the Battle of the Brandywine. Back down to the Brandywine and into the creek. It was running fast and clear and felt great. Initially, I had thought about running through it but with the current and water up to mid-thigh level it seemed that staying upright required a fast walk. Several runners took the opportunity to compete for the best river crossing with a combination of plunges, swimming, and other antics. Followed by a 400m sprint to the main house and warm breakfast sandwich and refreshments.

Club members – Greg Cauller, Lisa Jalot (honorable mention best river crossing), Carol Giampietro and I enjoyed this race along with the other 136 participants.
I highly recommend this race for anyone looking for a unique trail running experience next year.

Hugh Campbell
Hugh Campbell will be off to the USA Masters 5K National Championships in Syracuse, N.Y., which will be run on Sunday morning. If you recall, Hugh set the state 85-89 age-group record of 27:17 last week and it appears to be a single-age(88) national record. The time age-graded out to almost 100, meaning it was in world record territory. The course in Syracuse is known to be a fast out and back course with little elevation change and many national records have been set on it. I don’t want to be a jinx by predicting too much, but let’s put it this way: Hugh “jogged” around Delcastle at sub-ten-minute pace this morning. This was conversational pace for him, but that is already faster than his only competitor in his age-group has run, In addition to $100 Hugh will win if he takes his age-group, the top ten overall age-graded competitors will be awarded cash. I fully expect Hugh to be among them, if not among the very top three or four.

Nun Run Recap
Thanks to members who ran or volunteered at last Saturday’s Nun Run 5K!
Photos will be online by Thursday morning at www.NunRun5K.org. We had a record participation of 400 registered and 360 finishers. Volunteers included Jerry Herman, Karl Kalbacher, Pat Patnaude, Dan Weintraub, while Jim Steele, Karin Pszcszola and others manned the club table. Andy Jakubowich did a great job as lead bike before departing to ride another 100 miles or something like that.

World Record?
In case anyone hasn’t heard, Hugh Campbell broke his own state record for the second time for the 85-89 age-group at 5K. Hugh has been running at the McKean H.S. track one day a week and he has been working on his speed. He knocked over 1:20 off his previous state record and finished in 27:17. To understand the import of this achievement, this time is 25 seconds better than the previous national record for 85 to 89 men. The time age-grades out to 99.85, meaning that no man of 88 has ever run better. So it is also a single-age world record!

Hugh will be running the National Masters Championship 5K in Syracuse, N.Y on September 30.

Sheri Herrmann is coming back from a leg injury. So it is noteworthy that she won her age group in both the Bottle and Cork Ten Miler (1:20:13) and the Race for the Pink 5K (22:03).

Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame From Tom Fort:

To: PCVRC Members
Following is my invitation for each of you to become voting members of the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. With this membership, you become eligible to nominate and vote on Delaware athletes to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Tom Fort

September 2012

Dear Inductees, Members, and Friends of Sports:

The Delaware Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1976 to recognize outstanding contributions to sports in Delaware and by Delawareans. To date, we have inducted 302 individuals with Delaware ties in 32 different sports recognizing athletes, coaches, administrators, journalists, broadcasters and officials.

The Delaware Sports Museum was built as a part of the Frawley Stadium expansion and opened in June of 2002 to house the history of sports in Delaware. The Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame has operated the museum in addition to fulfilling its Hall of Fame duties.

After ten years the Museum is in need of operating funds. A decade of wear and tear takes a toll on exhibits, digital and video displays plus general infrastructure upkeep. We need your financial support to continue serving the public by collecting, preserving and displaying the history of sport of the First State.

As a Sustaining Member for 2013 you will receive a ballot and vote on the 2013 Inductees and have unlimited Museum access for you and your family. As a Sustaining Member, you will receive Signage in the Museum honoring your contribution plus special recognition in the 2013 induction banquet program.

Please help us to continue to be able to operate the Museum and commemorate the great sports history of Delaware and Delawareans.

In addition to financial support, we are seeking to expand our group of Museum volunteers. We need volunteers for everyday Museum operations, care for the Museum displays, maintain the Museum building, catalog our collections, prepare plans for school and senior tour groups, and to maintain and upgrade our web site and computer systems.

Please call me or Museum Director Jon Rafal with any questions.

Sincerely Yours in Sports,
Thomas H. Fort, President

Philadelphia Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon
Two club members sent in their recollections on the Philadelphia Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon from this past weekend:

From Keith Crispin:
Here’s my stats for the Philly half…;
Chip time 1:26:11 – Pace 6:35
7th from Delaware and I see Sarah Rusk was right on my tail
Div 21 out of 737
Overall 328 out of 15116

Ran about the same time as the last four or five years… Only difference I drop my car key – TWICE. Nothing like turning around and with 20,000 the people coming at ya. I lost a good 30 seconds… and on top of it I drop the key off at a pole and someone then stole it…. Luckily I drove up with friends (so why did I have a car key)?

The first half was 6:20 pace… fell apart from mile 7 – 11 6:38 pace and the last mile or so 6:22 pace. The endurance with good and the breathing was just too relax. It’s just the one hamstring. It’s so tight that I can’t get that leg going. Once it tightens not much more I can do. It’s been like this since Boston or maybe longer so I suspect I just have learn to deal with it. Anyway the good thing is that I didn’t blow up.. so Chicago in 3 weeks is now looking a little brighter. Maybe if I’m lucky I can get Annette to massage it out 20 minutes… each night.

From Jerry Herman:
Last Sunday, 9/16/12 2012 Rock ”n” Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon. It will always be PDR to me. What’s in a name anyway? I just really like to run this race. This was probably the 20th time I’ve run this race under its’ various names. I wasn’t nearly as fast as Keith or the other 9500+ runners that finished before me. My fastest mile was mile one in 9:49 and the slowest was mile 13 in 10:49 for a finish of 2:15, probably only two minutes slower than 2010.

I missed the race in 2011. That means that this year was the first year I ran the “new course” which went counter-clockwise around the river. Running counter-clockwise means that the last two-tenths was up hill. Probably not much of a hill but after 13 miles it was like Mt Everest to me.

The weather at the start was great. Almost two hours in to the race it became pretty warm. I guess to enjoy the best weather you just have to run faster.

To save money the Rock-n-Roll series didn’t put the usual information in the swag bag. You know little things like starting time and place and parking information. I was told it was part of the on line confirmation that was sent via E-mail. It is just something to keep in mind if you run one of their races.

The shirt is really nice. The “logo” on the front isn’t all that BIG and it is repeated on the side, towards the bottom on the back of the shirt. It is a nice blue color. No sponsor logos on the shirt. The entry fee tells me they didn’t need sponsors.

Would I run it again next year, high cost, minimal swag, nice shirt and an almost mandatory trip to the expo? For sure if I’m in town, I’ll be running PDR again.

9/7/12: New Club/DDC Sponsor, Group Runs, Hugh Campbell, Survey

From President Ray
New Club Sponsor Wins Race
PCVRC welcomes Al Carter and his SceneTap – B+ Foundation Race Team as presenting sponsor of the new DDC 5K. He’s a huge supporter of the club’s main charity partner. From his website:
“Al Carter won his first professional career race yesterday in the streets of Downtown Baltimore. TRG’s Al Carter and Patrick Pilet won the 2012 Baltimore Sports Car Challenge presented by SRT in GT Challenge in their #68 SceneTap – B+ Foundation – Adobe Road Winery Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.” …read more at www.bpositiveracing.com

Al hopes to be able to have his race car at Delaware Distance Classic on Oct 7, so be sure to be there. If not running, many volunteer critical opportunities are still available!

Group Runs Make Training Fun
Come to one of our group runs when possible. Help newer runners improve or make your own training more enjoyable. We had about 25 at our Pizza Run a couple weeks ago. I can’t bribe people with pizza & beer every week to run with me, but more people makes running easier to look forward to, even on a hot & humid day. The Horowitz twins are becoming Thursday regulars and new people have been showing up lately to run or walk. Hope to see you soon on a Wed or Thurs 6pm at Delcastle or Sun 8am on Main St. Newark!

Hugh Campbell Moorestown Article
Wednesday’s New-Journal running column by Kevin Tresolini featured PCVRC’s own Hugh Campbell. Hugh told me in a phone conversation that Tresolini had wanted to write the article before the Moorestown 8K,which was Hugh’s first event participating in the USATF Mid-Atlantic Road Race Series. Hugh told Tresolini that he ought to at least wait in case Hugh “fell on my face”. As the article makes clear, Hugh didn’t do that:
http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20120905/SPORTS1101/309050034/At-88-years-old-novice-runner-leads-pack?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CSports.

This is also a good time to report a result which was overlooked when previously reporting the Moorestown results. This writer was unaware that the club organizers had made an effort to have a runner from the club in every age-group at that race. Representing the club in the 14 and under age-group was eight year-old Liam Kauffman, who did well to finish 10th in a time of 48:17. All the other runners in that group, who finished ahead of LIam, were three to six years older than Liam.

Ed Maher of USATF Mid-Atlantic writes:

“I’ve received a couple of emails recently regarding how to apply the $2 Grand Prix discount when registering for Grand Prix races online. The Grand Prix page on the USATF Mid-Atlantic web site lists what should be used for each race.”

PCVRC’s own Delaware Distance Classic 15K is the next event in the series.

Runner Survey
This editor received an e-mail from a person representing Almighty, a technology & advertising firm in Boston, which has “built a number of running-related applications, digital experiences and installations”. For its own internal information, not for marketing purposes, it is conducting a survey of runners. To take the survey, to go: http://almty.co/run2012. To thank participants, it is giving away a new iPad to one randomly-selected survey entrant.
