Nun Run 5K: Saturday 9/15 9am
I’m again race director for this fundraiser for Little Sisters of the Poor in Newark. Register at www.NunRun5k.org or please contact me if you can volunteer. We need 1-2 lead bikes as well as course marshals and volunteers to man the PCVRC table where we’ll recruit members and runners for DDC. Any help is appreciated. ALL proceeds go to serving the needy elderly at the residence. Pizza, Chic-fil-A, beer, chocolate milk, DJ music, goodie bags, raffle prizes!!!! Contact Ray with questions.

From Lisa Jalot:
“A friend and elite tri athlete from the Dover area has planned this unique marathon/half marathon for this October.” Lisa is referring to the Monster Mash Half and Full Marathon, which Dirk Sweigart and Sheri Herrmann did and reported onlast year. It will be October 20. For more information, see: http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race197.aspx

From Tom Steenkamer:
On Sunday August 19th 9 members of the PCVRC participated in the annual Radnor 5k Steeplechase. We were greeted by enthusiastic volunteers and optimal temperatures and relatively low humidity. The weather produced a record turnout of over 500 for the 9th annual “not your ordinary” 5k.

The race takes place on the grounds of the Radnor Hunt club in Malvern PA and is routed through open fields on grass trails over some rolling terrain that is usually reserved for equestrian activities. The race course provided ample challenges once again this year as the race director modified the flat first mile to include some additional equestrian obstacles to hurdle and a new water pit to slosh across. In total there were 20 obstacles and 2 water pits to traverse.

Austin Gee led the team finishing in 5th place overall and 1st in his age group. Austin credits his solid performance to his selection of race footwear – his XC spikes to provide better footing across the obstacles. Club member Meghan Hain was the 3rd female overall. PCVRC had a number of age group award winners who took home the cherished bobble horse trophies.

PCVRC performed well and for we managed to outscore the Greater Philly club on this day for 2nd team place in this race. A hearty congratulations and thank you to all who competed!

This year’s USATF club competition has been very close, and there are only a several points separating the top clubs. PCVRC is currently in 4th place in the Grand Prix (road series) heading into the DDC 15k race. In the off-road (trail series) we are currently in 3rd with a break in the action until the Evansburg 10 miler at the end of October.

We have a great opportunity to solidify our club position and maybe move up in the road series with three races remaining. There are also two off-road races. I encourage anyone who is planning on running the DDC 15k or any of the remaining races to join USATF. Once again USATF is offering an end of season membership discount for $10 if you apply online. All races in the series are age graded so your time may be the one the helps the team move up a spot!

Discounted USATF Membership Now Available
For the remainder of 2012, membership in USATF will be offered at the discounted fee of $10 for memberships that are processed directly online. Paper/mailed-in applications will continued to be charged the regular fees of $20 for youth or $30 for adults. Either way, USATF membership continues to offer many benefits.

Upcoming Half Marathons
Here’s a list I compiled of a few local half marathons. David Baca and I will be doing the “Hands-on House”, so let us know if you’d like to join us.
a. Philly Rock and Roll (9/16 – day after Nun Run 5K)- $110, but an awesome course
b. Bird in Hand (9/8 at 730am) It looks like maybe no race day pick-up. Amish country roads $75.
c. Hands-on House (9/29) – Lancaster. Bird in Hand may have nicer scenery, but this one is just $50 and with 9am start, drive out that morning is feasible.
d. Ocean City, NJ is also $50, on 9/30.
e. Chestertown, MD on 9/22 is $75.
f. Sloppy Cuckoo in Philly (9/23) trail that some people enjoyed last year – for just $45.

Delaware Distance Classic 15K & 5K – Oct 7
As Joel’s message noted, we request your help on getting the word out for our club’s major event. Just 2 are registered so far for 5K, but we have over 75 in the 15K already! If you won’t be running, your help is needed on race day, especially now that we’ve got 2 races to organize.
To volunteer, please contact one of the following:
– Registration (starting 6:45am): Rachel B.
– Course Marshals (starting 8:00am): Vince M.
– Finish area/food tables (starting 8:15am): Dave M.

Fortitude for First Descents Marathon
… is back. I wrote last December about running this marathon in Cape Henlopen State Park one week after the Rehoboth Marathon went through the park. Then it appeared it was going to be a one-time event, having already been moved from August (when torrential rains forced cancellation) to December.

This year the marathon is scheduled two weeks earlier, on December 1, one week before Rehoboth. The price is a bit cheaper and the race is small and low key. Cape Henlopen SP is not as flat as you might think and, of course, it can be windy there. The 7:30 A.M. start this year makes it more difficult to stay at home and drive down that morning. With the event populated by many 50 staters (who get a $5 price discount), most of the runners are not especially competitive and are more likely to engage in conversation with other runners. For more info, see http://fortitude4fd.com/.

Race Results:
Unfortunately the results of the Radnor Run 5K, part of the MA-USATF Offroad Series, have not yet been posted. So they’ll appear next week.

8/14/12: Healthy Kids Running Series, Plunge & Run, Race Results

Condolences
Pike Creek Valley Running club sends heartfelt condolences to former club President Rudy Antonini on the passing of his sister Mary Jo Dixon after a 20 year battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713.

Healthy Kids Running Series
Club member and New Balance store manager Jamie Graham is now in charge of the Healthy Kids Running Series here in Wilmington. Jamie says “The events are going to be held on Sundays at Springer Elementary School corner of Silverside and Shipley Rd. It’s a running program for kids ages pre-k to 8th grade. They run anywhere from a 50 yard dash, ¼ mile, 1/2 mile and mile based on their age. If you have run with any parents and could pass along that this program exists I would greatly appreciate it. My plan is to bring this program to Newark in the Spring.”

Contact her through the Brandywine or Christiana stores for more information or visit www.healthykidsrunningseries.com

HAC Plunge & Run
From Kelly Reph-Jones: I am hosting the 2nd annual HAC Plunge & Run Aug 19th. It’s a 1/4 mile pool swim followed by a 3.2 mile run at Hockessin Athletic Club benefiting the Mike Clark Legacy Foundation. Go to http://www.fuel3sports.com/ for more information.

Group Runs
Since I had one club member call me with his best 5K time in the past year, I feel that I need to repeat that I have stopped hosting McCorq’s Fun Run. Do not show up at my house on the Thursday before Labor Day. I am more than willing to offer help to someone who wishes to carry on the tradition or start a new end of summer event. While I’m at it, this is also a reminder that this bulletin will need a new editor by the beginning of 2013. Again, I’m willing to help in the transition.

Regular group runs continue each Wed & Thurs 6pm at Delcastle, through summer and fall.

8/1/12: BBQ Recap, Sunday Fun Run, DDC Sponsors, McCorq in Utah

Info from President Ray:
Club BBQ Recap
Around 35 members enjoyed a comfortable afternoon at White Clay Park on 7/21.
Special thanks to Rachel for arranging and Rich for grilling! Beer, soda and lots of food gave us the energy for a spectacular Wiffle Ball game. The “instant classic” final was 17-16, decided in the bottom of the 9th (or thereabouts). Rudy Antonini was one of the defensive stars and there were no reported injuries. After more burgers, dogs & salad, a few of the brave then played a competitive game of volleyball. Muscles were surely aching in the following days.

Sunday Group Runs
A nice crowd of almost 20 met for the regular Sunday 8am Panera Run this week, despite the high humidity. Between our group and other runners and cyclists, it seems that everyone is pumped up from watching the Olympics. If you haven’t hit a Sunday 8am run, check it out. Most do an out-and-back course from Main Street into White Clay Park, so you can run as little or as much as you like. With 20 people, there are various paces and with others on the trail, you’ll never feel alone. No parking fees in Newark on Sunday mornings and most relax in front of Panera after running. Another option for next Sunday is…

Brunch at Boyle’s 5K Fun Run – THIS COMING SUNDAY
2012-08-05 Arrive after 8am for 830am start
Location: Boyle Estate, Mendenhall Village
35 Forest Creek Drive, Hockessin DE

Run at 8:30 AM – Nominal 5K course will be mapped or marked within Mendenhall Village, Limestone Hills and Limestone Road (Rt. 7). Feel free to extend or run it several times! Followed by Brunch – what, like 9:30ish?

Egg casseroles (sausage, spinach, etc.) plus mimosas will be provided by Denise! If you can bring something (bagels, fruit, water or your favorite breakfast specialty), please contact Denise. These are requested but not required.
Kickball if anyone has the energy, horseshoes if we don’t!
Contact: Denise (RSVP requested)
Email:
In addition, you should contact Dirk Sweigart (302-545-7047) to contribute a unique ingredient to our Boyle Bloody Mary bar.

Delaware Distance Classic Updates
The 30th DDC is coming up on October 7 at Frawley Stadium at the Riverfront. Mark the date to either run or to volunteer. With the addition of our inaugural 5K race, we’ll need more volunteers than ever to assist with registration, course marshalling, and set-up/clean-up. (Details to follow on that.) Post race party will be bigger than ever (music, beer, pizza, random prizes,…) and improvements have been made to the course.

New Balance Brandywine & Christiana is our Title Sponsor and the 15K is presented by new sponsor M&T Bank. See www.pcvrc.com for links to each of our sponsors’ websites. We thank New Balance (Jamie Graham), M&T Bank, Harvest Market (Bob Klescics), Foot Care Group, Hockessin Athletic Club, Premier Wine, Access Labor (Rich Szymanski), Cheskin Chiropractic, Perpetual Motion Sport (Vince McIntosh), Caffe Gelato (Ryan German), B+ Foundation (Jim Steele) for their support!
…and on race day, you’ll be able to personally thank Dan Weintraub for supplying the beer!

Additional sponsors are still quite welcome. Proceeds benefit B+ Foundation, MCLF and the club. Registration is open at our site for online mail-in entry. First 400 15K registrants receive a New Balance tech shirt (similar to DE Marathon shirt).
