5/5/15: Couch 2 5K, Healthy Kids Running Series, Group Runs, Dan Feldstein

Couch-to-5k Spring Session
We continue to have good turnout, especially for returning participants!

The Newark Reservoir (map) is on Old Paper Mill Road, just east of Paper Mill Road and just north of Timothy’s (where the Christmas party was held). If you missed the first session you’re still more than welcome to come out and walk or run! See you there!

Healthy Kids Running Series
From Jamie Graham:

Pike Creek Valley Running Club Members Jamie Graham and Kelly Jones are in need of volunteers for their Healthy Kids Running Series. The Healthy Kids Running Series is a 5 week running program for children Pre-K through Middle School. We run races according to age groups: Pre-k = 50 yard dash, K & 1st = ¼ mile, 2nd & 3rd = ½ mile, 4th and 5th grade/Middle School = mile.

These races are set up like a cross country course around the perimeter of the school fields. We are looking for helpers in the finish chute to keep our Pre-K kids from getting out of line, course marshals, and stretching leaders. All the races are over within the hour. Parents can sign up race day or online. Dates: April 12th, April 19th, 26th, May 3rd, & May 17th.

Jamie’s in Wilmington: Springer Middle School (Shipley Rd.) Sundays at 4pm-5pm. Volunteers are to arrive at 3:30pm.

Kelly’s in Hockessin: North Star Elementary Sundays at 2pm-3pm. Volunteers to arrive at 1:30pm.

Please contact Jamie () or Kelly () if you are able to help.

Thank you!

Race Results, Reviews and Accomplishments:
Combined results from the last two weeks…

Dan Feldstein was 2nd in his age group at the Dover Air Force Base Heritage 5k, finishing in 29:53, a 9:38-per-mile pace! Way to go Dan!

Not to be outdone Dan Feldstein won his age group this past Sunday at the Delaware Teal Ribbon 5k. He finished in 30:03, only 10 seconds slower than the other race!

Group Runs
PCVRC hosts 3 group runs every week. You are welcome to come to any and there is no cost to attend!

Sunday Morning
Sundays we meet at 8 a.m. in Newark, in front of Panera Bread on Main Street (map). A group usually socializes at Panera afterward but that’s totally informal, based on who shows up and what people’s training plans for the day are.

Wednesday and Thursday Evenings
Wednesday and Thursday nights at 6 p.m. people meet at Delcastle Park (map) near the tennis courts. (That’s on McKennans Church Road just south of Duncan Road.) Delcastle Park has a 1.75-mile path marked in 0.25-mile increments. It’s wide enough so people can walk in either direction. This is nice for variety as each direction definitely offers its own challenges.

4/22/15: Boston Marathon, Club Officers, Tyler 10K, Valley Forge, Healthy Kids

Boston Marathon
We are very proud of all our Boston Marathon runners! Conditions weren’t great but everyone pushed through and conquered one of the premier running events! Phenomenal work everyone!

PCVRC Board of Officers
We are pleased to announce that the club’s slate of proposed officers for 2015 were ratified by a quorum of the club members who were in attendance at the April 15, 2015 Boston Marathon sendoff party. Interim President Joel Schiller confirmed that no external nominations for club officers had been received by the Board and he proposed that external nominations for club officers be officially closed.

He then proposed that the Board’s recommended slate of club officers for 2015, determined at the Board meeting of January 25, 2015, be ratified by those club members in attendance. Lori Culnane seconded the motions and the motions passed without dissention.

Therefore, we are pleased to announce the following club officers for 2015:

President Stacey Schiller
Vice President Gerry Herman
Secretary Dirk Sweigart
Treasurer Lenora Wagner

All club members are reminded that Board meetings of the club are open meetings and you are encouraged to participate. If you wish to attend please contact any board member. The 2015 calendar of club meetings will be published in a future e-bulletin.

On Saturday, April 11, PCVRC had 12 runners compete in the Tyler Arboretum 10k. The Tyler Arboretum race has become annual celebration of the arrival of spring. The event has sold out the past 4 years and with perfect spring weather a capacity crowd was on hand. PCVRC finished the day with a solid team score and a number of outstanding performances.

In the USATF team competition PCVRC finished the day in 2nd place. Tim Schuler, Lisa Jalot and Andrea Rubinoff took home age group awards!

PCVRC is currently in 2nd place after 2 races in the 2015 season. Thank you to all those who came out to race @ Tyler.

Trail Triple Crown
The next trail race is the Triple Crown this Saturday, April 25th, at White Clay Creek State Park on Rt. 896. The 10k race goes off @ 10AM. Day-of registration is available.

Come out and support the team on the home course. Race info is here.

Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-Miler
In the Grand Prix series 6 PCVRC members competed in the 10th annual Valley Forge Revolutionary 5 mile run on Sunday, April 19th. Falling on the same weekend as the Boston Marathon and a number of local races our resources were stretched. One a near perfect morning the PCVRC team took up the challenge and conquered the hills on the historic grounds of Valley Forge National Park.

The club took home 1st place in the USATF competition for the day by narrowly defeating Greater Philadelphia track club by 8 points. Congratulations and thank you to the everyone who competed at VF. Age group award winners : Chuck Crabb, Jon Mazzio, Jo Baird, Beth Howlett and Bob Callahan.

PCVRC remains in 1st place in the club completion after 2 races. The next race is the Broad St. run on Sunday, May 3rd. If you are running Broad St and not currently a USATF member please consider joining USATF. You get free PCVRC membership the next year for every year you run at least 4 USATF races as a USATF member!

Delaware Marathon Volunteers
From Sue DeNardo:

This year we have been working on a website to make the Delaware Marathon volunteer sign-up process easier for you (and your team). It is now live, so please take a look and, if you are a group captain, encourage your volunteers to do the same. Here are a few tips to help you out:

The website link is dmrf.ivolunteer.com

Saturday packet pickup, water stops, and several of the course marshal spots are broken into shifts. If you plan on covering that spot all day, please register for both shifts.

For course marshals, the spots that are critical are listed separately so that we can make sure they are filled. All other spots are listed under an “unassigned” section that will be assigned as we get closer to race day. When registering for an unassigned spot, you may request a specific location. If you have questions about a preferred location, please email me.

Once signed up, the volunteer will receive a confirmation email to which he/she will need to respond. Once that step is completed, the slot assignment is secured.

Please have everyone in your group register through this website. It will enable us to communicate via email regarding parking, updates, etc.

Questions? Please contact me at or 302-690-9345. Please let us know of any glitches, suggestions, unclear information, etc as you go through the process. And please, encourage others to volunteer.

Thanks so much. We couldn’t do it without you!!

PCVRC Boston Marathon Send-Off
From Rachel Perkowski:
Please join us on Wednesday, April 15th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Catherine Rooney’s in Wilmington as we celebrate those participating in the 119th Boston Marathon.

This is an annual club event that allows us the opportunity to congratulate those who have worked so hard throughout the year to qualify to run the infamous Boston Marathon.

Like most club events, this event is included as part of your membership. Non-club members are more than welcome to attend; all that we ask is that a donation is made to help with the cost of the food.

Anyone that would like to join the club or renew their current membership may do so on the night of the Send-Off. We hope that you will join us as we wish those who are running the best of luck!

Any questions regarding this event can be forwarded to

Michelle Zechman finished the Hot Chocolate 15k in 1:19:48! Excellent work Michelle!

Carll Human was just in front of Michelle, finishing the 15k in 1:16:16! Great job!

Carll Human also ran the Rock-N-Roll Raleigh Half Marathon this past Sunday, finishing in 1:52:42! Way to go!

John Schultz completed the 32.65-mile Brandywine Trail End-to-End Hike this past Saturday, walking from Ludwig’s Corner, PA, to Brandywine Creek State Park, finishing in 12:54! As John put it: “Lots of time lost to pit stops and to figuring out the trail where blazes were m missing. Also I fell into a muddy brier patch – it wasn’t Br’er Fox’s fault.” John added: “About a third of it is on paved roads, but the rest is real trail: one hill/rock/root after another.” Phenomenal job John!

Matt Cutrona won the Race for the Ages 10k this past Saturday, finishing in 38:35.5, a 6:12-per-mile pace! Awesome job Matt!

The Boston Marathon send-off party is a week from today, April 15th! Come send off our runners in style and blow off steam from tax day!

We had a phenomenal turnout for the first C25k session! Many thanks to Darlise and Joel for leading the coaching and all the other members who helped out! More in the C25k section below.

I’m adding a recurring section to the e-newsletter about our group runs. If you ever need a reminder of when we meet and/or where, just go to the section above the membership info for handy information and links!

Information on volunteering for the Delaware Marathon is included. Ray Christensen leads a course marshal/cheerleading contingent at Kentmere & Bancroft Parkway. If you want to join his group sign up on the website shown in the section below and pick Kentmere & Bancroft Parkway Area from the Sunday Course Marshals page.

Couch-to-5k Spring Session
I haven’t been to every C25k session but Monday’s class was the largest by far that I’ve ever been to! Awesome job Darlise and Joel! Thanks also to Amy Temple, Paula Jermyn, Ben Mack, Lori Culnane, Daniel Wipf and Caitlin Reilly for coming out to help coach and participate!

The Newark Reservoir (map) is on Old Paper Mill Road, just east of Paper Mill Road and just north of Timothy’s (where the Christmas party was held). If you missed the first session you’re still more than welcome to come out and walk or run! See you there!

Race Results, Reviews and Accomplishments:
There were several big races but not a lot of submissions. If you did anything noteworthy we want to hear about it and brag on you!

Dan Wipf ran in the Rumspringa Half-Marathon on Saturday, finishing 1:57:47. The conditions were SLIGHTLY different than at the Shamrock Half (more hills and wind this past weekend) but, despite that, Dan only missed his PR time by six seconds! He went from never running a sub-2-hour half to doing it twice in a row! Fantastic job Dan!

Mark DeNio (your humble editor) completed his first 5k since last August’s injury, walking the Race Judicata course in 1:01:57! That’s a good 10 minutes off my usual pace but a lot better than I thought I would do for having such a long stretch off, especially because I could only do one 1.75-mile lap at Delcastle Park two days prior. Training starts for the Bird-in-Hand Half this September!

Couch-to-5k Spring Session
The next C25k session will start on Monday, April 6th. Darlise is looking for volunteers to help coach. Previous graduates are especially sought as they can inspire participants and show what heights can be achieved! E-mail Darlise at if you can help.

One additional note is that Joel Schiller will be coaching the walkers so let your friends know if there are any that would like to train to walk a 5k! I will be using the sessions to improve my own walking, encourage people and get encouraged.

Amy Temple came up with these wonderful pictures to serve as reminders and motivation. We’ll show one a week until the program start. Feel free to share on social media or wherever else they might help get someone there. Thanks Amy!
