5/24/13: New Castle, Crabowitz, Concert Series, Track Workouts, Broad St.

St. Peter’s 5K Run/Walk, Thursday, May 30th
Please join Jim Steele next week for a nice run through Old New Castle, with pizza and beer after the race! Thursday, May 30th ~ 6:30PM, registration starts at 5pm. Benefits the Elizabeth A. Loncki Scholarship Fund
Visit http://www.oldnewcastlerun.com/ for details and to register.

Yes, the Crabowitz, June 13th (Rich Szymanski)
Please mark June 13th on your calendars to join us for the 5th annual “Crabowitz” 5K fun run and crabs/pizza/beer/etc.! We will be supplying crabs and pizza and our own Brewmaster, Tony BBQ, will once again be making the “Rebel Electrolyte Ale”! Due to popularity, I believe he’s brewing up two kegs.

Arriving any time after 6:00 is good but we’ll likely start the 5K run around 6:15/6:30 so if you want to run 3.1 hilly miles first, be sure and arrive in time for the start. Running is not required, but cheering is!

Please bring your drink of choice and let us know if you can attend (443-309-5138 or ) so we can have a head count. This is a family/dogs friendly event, so bring everyone. Could you please let us know if you are a pizza person, crab person, or both.

As we have done in the past two years, we will again be collecting money for The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation. We hope to surpass last year’s VERY generous donations of over $2,000!
http://www.bepositive.org/

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 13th!!

Szymanski House, North Point, 709 Haddon Rd, Wilmington, Delaware 19808

Delaware Marathon Running Festival
There is so much that can be said about how terrific this event was this year. In the 10th year, it just keeps getting better! Joel, Wayne, Stacey and the entire team do such a great job of organizing the race Rich organized another fine Rebel encampment, and so many Pike creek runners ran in the full, the half or the relays that there is way too many to mention. Thanks to all the many volunteers who make this race such a great success and such a shining example of how Delaware knows how to run and party!

Grand Prix Series
Last Sunday, 12 PCVRC USATF team members joined 40,000 other friends for the 34th annual running of the…

Broad St. 10 miler – From Claire Neilan

A good number of PCVRC members ran the Broad Street 10-miler in Philadelphia last Sunday. Despite a super early start (Lori repeatedly grumbled that she was never listening to me again when I told her she had to enter a race!) the weather was absolutely perfect for racing and we got parked in a great spot right next to the subway. Once we got up to Broad Street, we ran into fellow PCVRC runners Matt and Mike. We met some interesting locals (ask Denise!). Jordan and I started in the same corral, and after about an hour of sitting and standing around, we were off. Lots of Boston red socks to be seen – very nice touch. For those of you who have never run Broad Street before, it is a no-brainer race and is a straight shot all the way down Broad Street, and overall is slightly downhill. It is a large race (38,000 this year) but there is still plenty of room for everyone. It finishes in the shipyard, you get a nice medal, and a bag filled with plenty of post-race munchies. I ended up having my best race ever – I had a huge PR, I felt great throughout, and had negative splits. I couldn’t believe it when I looked at my watch at Mile 7 and realized that I don’t usually run this fast in a 5K! So I felt elated when I finished (1:14:59).

I met Matt and Mike afterwards at the petting zoo (yes, really). They also had great runs, and Matt PR’d. Then it was back to the ‘R’ sign to meet the rest of the Rebel Runners/PCVRC members. Met Jordan, Sheri, Dirk, Denise, Kurt, ….and then John C and Kelly J were supporting. Denise also had a big PR. Tailgating time! So all in all, a great day, and hopefully the members that we did not manage to meet that morning also had great runs. It was certainly a good day for a PR.

Current USATF results are located at the Mid Atlantic USATF Long Distance running page – http://www.mausatf.org/htmlldr/long-distance-running.htm

USATF news, from Tom Steenkamer
The USATF spring racing season has been busy lately and I have been a bit tardy with providing team updates.

We are approaching the end of the “Spring Race Gauntlet” – three weekends, three races. PCVRC has competed in the Valley Forge 5-miler, the Triple Crown 10k trail race, and this weekend is he Broad St. 10-miler.

Valley Forge, April 21 (review by Meggan Hain)
Sunday April 21st dawned cool and breezy. A small crew from PCVRC headed out to the Main Line to run the Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-miler, which was a marvelous way to see the Valley Forge National Park. The team included: Rich Szymanski, Meggan Hain, Claire Neilan, Hugh Campbell and Epi Comacho. Everyone was feeling ready to run as we stretched behind General Washington’s camp huts to keep out of the chilly wind. The race started along the main ridge with a lovely view of the park.

In total there were 943 participants which made for a decent field but fortunately there was plenty of space to get running. The race course ran along the tar road of the park winding up and down the rolling hills between the wood and open fields in a gentle loop. The final mile included a long downhill followed by a steep-up hill just to tax the legs before a sprint finish. Overall the course was fast with several people getting PR’s, Epi taking 1st in his age-group and Hugh Campbell hitting his target of finishing under 50 minutes (49:44) and also winning second in his age-group (75-99).

Triple Crown 10K, April 27
Last Saturday, the club competed on our “home” course in the Triple Crown 10k trail run at White Clay Creek State park. The course is one of our favorites, with not too many rocks, roots and a mild dose of hills. The weather was perfect and PCVRC had a strong showing. Running with “fresh legs” after their Boston Marathon run two weeks ago, the club was led by strong performances by Andy Jakubowitch and John Costello, 4th and 7th overall respectively. Overall the club had a good day and enjoyed strong participation with 14 club members completing the 10k. There were even a few hardy souls who couldn’t get enough and followed up the 10k by completing the 5k as well – congrats to Trish and Lori.

With such a beautiful spring morning the team enjoyed the post-race BBQ which developed into a post-race tail gate in the parking lot. Good times indeed.

Official scoring for the trail race has not been completed. Based on a quick review of the results the club should solidify its 3rd place position in the trail series.

All of the USATF results are available at http://www.mausatf.org/htmlldr/long-distance-running.htm

Boston Marathon – Dirk Sweigart
This year, Sheri and I decided with some reservations to take the “Doug White” bus to Boston. It’s was Doug’s 40th (and last) Boston and turned out to be a real pleasure. We “rubbed shoulders” with both first-timers and seasoned vets, all who joined to make Doug’s last Boston very memorable. The weather was perfect and the bus put us right at the start (and was right there at the end). The crowds were amazing as usual. Of course, moments of triumph turned to tears as the tragedy unfolded at the race finish. Many of us were away from the explosions and heard them. A few of our runners were close to where it happened and a couple more, including Doug, got diverted at the finish line. It was a sad end to what was otherwise a fine day for running in a city that supports their event second to none.

Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, Richmond VA
Member Nancy Fleming ran the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond VA (named one of the country’s top ten running races by USA Today) as part of her training with a B + team for the upcoming Delaware half marathon. She says “I took along megaphone Dan [Weintraub] who helped cheer me on to a PB in this 10k race! It was patriotic & fun!”

USATF news
The second USATF Off-Road race of the season was held at the Tyler Arboretum on Saturday, April 6. This race continues to present logistical challenges due to its popularity, and small field size. Once again it sold out a month prior to race day. Thanks to Rich for hand delivering the balance of our team entries to the race director’s home in Media – we fielded a full squad.

A cool morning greeted the PCVRC team to the grounds of the Arboretum with pleasant race conditions for the 10k on the wooded grounds of the arboretum. Led by a strong effort from Josh Loren, 3rd overall, and complemented by strong performances from new club members Dave Wiechecki and Paul Randolph, the team made up some ground in the season standings.

The team scoring would not be complete without the ladies and once again we were fortunate to have a strong contingent of women in the race. Carol Giampietro and Andrea Rubinoff rounded out the scoring for the club. Carol turned an outstanding AG using the 10k as her “Boston tune-up” and Andrea recovered from her spill on the Chilly Cheeks and showed no fear during the multiple stream crossings.

I am happy to report that the team came home with no injuries or bruises! Of course the trail did have its casualties as fellow competitor Chuck Shields from Greater Philly sustained a significant fall and came home looking like a prize fighter. (Those who know him can check out his FB page for the pictures.)

The next off-road race of the season is Saturday, April 27. The Triple Crown 10k is held on the grounds of White Clay Creek State Park in Newark. Come out and support the team on our home turf.

Couch to 5K program
PCVRC, in collaboration with New Balance, is offering a Couch 2 5k program to members and non-members (so tell your family and friends)! Whether your goal is to walk or run a 5k, we have the group for you.

For those interested in running a 5k, come meet with the group on Mondays starting May 6th at the Newark Reservoir. The contact people for this group are Paula Jermyn and Darlise DiMatteo. If walking a 5k is your goal, that group will meet on Thursdays at Delcastle Recreation area starting May 9th. The contact person for this group is Jamie Graham. Both groups will meet at 6pm. Get in touch at

We will start with general introductions and a brief discussion of that night’s workout. You will also receive that week’s training plan for you to follow on your schedule, although we would love to see you at any of the other group runs/walks. Incentive prizes will be given out for those who complete all 9 weeks of the running program or 8 weeks of the walking program. There is no cost for non-club members for the first 3 sessions. We hope that after meeting new friends and getting a glimpse of what PCVRC can do to help you reach your fitness goals, you will join the club before the 4th session. Currently, our target races are the B+ on 6/20, the Nun Run on 9/14, and DDC 5K on 10/6. Please note- this is a rolling schedule. If you cannot make the kick-off meetings, your week one will start when you come out and meet us. Look for registration forms in April. Spread the word!

BBQ & Beer Tasting Event for B+, from Jim Steele
I have arranged to have a special event at Twin Lakes Brewery on RT 52 just north of Greenville. Twin Lakes will provide a tour of the brewery and allow us to “taste” beers for 3 hours. Along with the tasting, I will have a BBQ provided by the Slower Lower BBQ team. These guys compete in sanctioned KCBS events and have won several awards over the past few years. I promise they’ll provide some outstanding BBQ, including pulled pork, brisket, etc. Trust me, I’ve had a lot of it!

When: Sunday, April 14th 3-6pm
Where: Twin Lakes Brewery, 4210 Kennett Pike, Greenville, DE 19807
How much? $42.20 per person (why? 42.2K equals 26.2 miles)
RSVP to by April 7th to get your tickets!

Delaware Marathon
Save the dates for the Delaware Marathon weekend (May 11th and 12th). PCVRC is going to have a table at the expo where we will promote the club and its activities including the new Couch to 5K (C25K) program. We are planning to have some of the new PCVRC gear at the table too. Anyone interested in helping out at the table should contact Claire () for details. As always, volunteers for all aspects of the races are needed. There will be several club members helping out with registration/packet pick-up. We had a lot of fun doing this last year and we intend to again this year so come join us!

Group Runs Continue…
As mentioned in the last eBulletin, contact Denise Boyle if you’d like to host a Friday Fun Run when the weather gets warmer. In the meantime, you’re always welcome to our Wed & Thurs 6 pm runs at Delcastle and the Sunday morning Panera (Main Street in Newark) runs. There is always someone to run with.

2nd Annual Cherry Blossom 5K

Over 450 participants.

Congratulations to John Schultz on winning the “Trailblazer Award” at the Tyler Arboretum 10K, awarded annually to one runner whom the Delco Road Runners Club considers to have been an outstanding participant in the Tyler Arboretum Trail Run over the years! Way to go John!

Carlsbad 5000
Matt Cutrona, Greg Cauller, and Lynn Knothe recently traveled to Carlsbad, CA to run the Carlsbad 5000. The race is billed as the world’s fastest 5k due to the vast number of national, age group, and world records set there. The course is not super-fast – there are two hairpin turns and a roughly three-quarter mile gradual uphill in the second mile. The last quarter mile is a slight downhill to the finish. The race is an all-day event, with five open races based in age groups, a walk, wheelchair invitational, and the elite races. A select number of runners register for the “All Day 25k” and run in all of the open races.

Matt and Greg ran in the first race of the day, the master’s men. Matt ran a lifetime PR, recording 16:59.3 on his watch. The results rounded every time up to the next full second (thank you NOVA for providing times to the hundredth of a second!). Greg followed shortly after in 17:20, placing 4th in 50-54. Lynn ran in the next race, crossing the line in just under 20:00. From Lynne, “it was a great feeling to cross the line and hear the announcer say ‘Lynn Knothe, from Wilmington, Del, crossing the line under 20 minutes’”.

All of our runners came away from the race with their best times of the season so far even after feeling a little sluggish from flying across the country. Prior to watching the elite invitational races (won in 13:20 and 15:25), they celebrated in the beer garden and then visited race sponsor Pizza Port and a local Irish pub to celebrate good races.

Board Meetings: PCVRC Board meetings are scheduled for these dates in 2013 – Apr 23, Jun 18, Aug 06, Sep 17, Nov 12. Board meetings are open to all members – we do ask that you contact a board member of your interest to attend before the meeting to confirm the date and location. All meetings are at 6:30 pm.
