Boston Marathon – Dirk Sweigart
This year, Sheri and I decided with some reservations to take the “Doug White” bus to Boston. It’s was Doug’s 40th (and last) Boston and turned out to be a real pleasure. We “rubbed shoulders” with both first-timers and seasoned vets, all who joined to make Doug’s last Boston very memorable. The weather was perfect and the bus put us right at the start (and was right there at the end). The crowds were amazing as usual. Of course, moments of triumph turned to tears as the tragedy unfolded at the race finish. Many of us were away from the explosions and heard them. A few of our runners were close to where it happened and a couple more, including Doug, got diverted at the finish line. It was a sad end to what was otherwise a fine day for running in a city that supports their event second to none.

Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, Richmond VA
Member Nancy Fleming ran the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond VA (named one of the country’s top ten running races by USA Today) as part of her training with a B + team for the upcoming Delaware half marathon. She says “I took along megaphone Dan [Weintraub] who helped cheer me on to a PB in this 10k race! It was patriotic & fun!”

USATF news
The second USATF Off-Road race of the season was held at the Tyler Arboretum on Saturday, April 6. This race continues to present logistical challenges due to its popularity, and small field size. Once again it sold out a month prior to race day. Thanks to Rich for hand delivering the balance of our team entries to the race director’s home in Media – we fielded a full squad.

A cool morning greeted the PCVRC team to the grounds of the Arboretum with pleasant race conditions for the 10k on the wooded grounds of the arboretum. Led by a strong effort from Josh Loren, 3rd overall, and complemented by strong performances from new club members Dave Wiechecki and Paul Randolph, the team made up some ground in the season standings.

The team scoring would not be complete without the ladies and once again we were fortunate to have a strong contingent of women in the race. Carol Giampietro and Andrea Rubinoff rounded out the scoring for the club. Carol turned an outstanding AG using the 10k as her “Boston tune-up” and Andrea recovered from her spill on the Chilly Cheeks and showed no fear during the multiple stream crossings.

I am happy to report that the team came home with no injuries or bruises! Of course the trail did have its casualties as fellow competitor Chuck Shields from Greater Philly sustained a significant fall and came home looking like a prize fighter. (Those who know him can check out his FB page for the pictures.)

The next off-road race of the season is Saturday, April 27. The Triple Crown 10k is held on the grounds of White Clay Creek State Park in Newark. Come out and support the team on our home turf.

2nd Annual Cherry Blossom 5K
Denise Boyle 25:16 (3rd in age)
Over 450 participants.

Congratulations to John Schultz on winning the “Trailblazer Award” at the Tyler Arboretum 10K, awarded annually to one runner whom the Delco Road Runners Club considers to have been an outstanding participant in the Tyler Arboretum Trail Run over the years! Way to go John!

Carlsbad 5000
Matt Cutrona, Greg Cauller, and Lynn Knothe recently traveled to Carlsbad, CA to run the Carlsbad 5000. The race is billed as the world’s fastest 5k due to the vast number of national, age group, and world records set there. The course is not super-fast – there are two hairpin turns and a roughly three-quarter mile gradual uphill in the second mile. The last quarter mile is a slight downhill to the finish. The race is an all-day event, with five open races based in age groups, a walk, wheelchair invitational, and the elite races. A select number of runners register for the “All Day 25k” and run in all of the open races.

Matt and Greg ran in the first race of the day, the master’s men. Matt ran a lifetime PR, recording 16:59.3 on his watch. The results rounded every time up to the next full second (thank you NOVA for providing times to the hundredth of a second!). Greg followed shortly after in 17:20, placing 4th in 50-54. Lynn ran in the next race, crossing the line in just under 20:00. From Lynne, “it was a great feeling to cross the line and hear the announcer say ‘Lynn Knothe, from Wilmington, Del, crossing the line under 20 minutes’”.

All of our runners came away from the race with their best times of the season so far even after feeling a little sluggish from flying across the country. Prior to watching the elite invitational races (won in 13:20 and 15:25), they celebrated in the beer garden and then visited race sponsor Pizza Port and a local Irish pub to celebrate good races.

Board Meetings: PCVRC Board meetings are scheduled for these dates in 2013 – Apr 23, Jun 18, Aug 06, Sep 17, Nov 12. Board meetings are open to all members – we do ask that you contact a board member of your interest to attend before the meeting to confirm the date and location. All meetings are at 6:30 pm.

Planning has already started for a very successful DDC in 2013. This is our key club event and fundraiser! Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the DDC contact Claire at . Next meeting date is April 9, 7.30pm at Claire’s.

New PCVRC running clothing is almost ready!!
We have both singlets and long sleeve tech shirts. Pink/white for women and dark grey/red for men. Singlets will be printed with the PCVRC logo on front and the letters ‘PCVRC’ on the back. Long sleeves will have logo on front and the letters ‘PCVRC’ down one sleeve. Once they are printed we will post photos for viewing. Singlets will be offered free to those who have run 4 or more USATF races for the club. They will cost $10 for other members. The cost of the long sleeves is still TBD but is expected to be around $25. Delivery expected in approximately four weeks (men’s long sleeves will be available in the summer). More details to follow.

Delaware Marathon
Save the dates for the Delaware Marathon weekend (May 11th and 12th). PCVRC is going to have a table at the expo where we will promote the club and its activities including the new Couch to 5K (C25K) program. We are planning to have some of the new PCVRC gear at the table too. Anyone interested in helping out at the table should contact Claire () for details. As always, volunteers for all aspects of the races are needed. There will be several club members helping out with registration/packet pick-up. We had a lot of fun doing this last year and we intend to again this year so come join us!

From the editor – We are no longer routinely publishing race results. However…I will publish any results sent to me at or at . So please continue to send me results “of note” and I will put them in the newsletter. Occasionally, I may be moved to publish a list of all PCVRC runners from a big local race (as I did with CR in this issue) but I am not promising this as a regular feature. USATF racers running for the club will have their results published as they are sent to me.

I am particularly interested in acknowledging significant other accomplishments that may not get noticed otherwise – someone who ran a “first” (5K to a marathon, a tri, etc.) or ran in a “destination” race (like a Ragnar, Big Sur Marathon, etc.) So please, tell on your friends! And I am always in need of race reviews!

Club USATF racing news
We had a great participation for the first weekend of the 2013 USATF Grand Prix series. And the results are even better!!

For the first time in recent history PCVRC finished 1st among all competing clubs in the interclub age graded scoring. (In 2005 PCVRC was 2nd) USATF scoring for this weekend uses composite scoring across both races using the top five age graded scores (at least one score must be a woman and no runner can count twice) from each participating club.

On a crisp Saturday morning, thirteen club members took to the roads of Haddonfield NJ in the Adrenaline 5k. A typically strong field chased Bryn Mawr’s Matt McKeeman (14:45) with the top five runners finishing under 15 minutes. The field is always fast and deep and this year was no exception; the top 29 finishers were under 16 minutes and the top 124 were under 19 minutes.

PCVRC was led by yet another record setting performance by our very humble Hugh Campbell. Hugh’s time for the 5k was 26:34 and age graded to 102.5! Way to go Hugh!!!

The highlighted entries were used for team scoring. PCVRC earned 435.986 points, just 0.943 ahead of Philadelphia power house Bryn Mawr. Congratulations and thanks to all those who competed this past weekend.

The following morning provided even colder temperatures for the 50th running of the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon. Eighteen PCVRC USATF members (including four who competed the previous day) took to the challenge of the hills on Walnut St., Park Dr., Kentmere Parkway and (personal favorite) the final climb up Market St. to the finish.

CR proved to be a difficult test as always and did not produce any better age results for the club but there were many proud finishers by the time everyone gathered at the Washington St. Ale house!
