8/12/10: Fun Run, New Balance sponsors PCVRC, Beach to Beacon 10k

Glasgow Park fun run this Friday
Adam Shilling is helping organize a 5K fun run on 8/13. Free to members and guests. “Registration” starts at 6:00pm for a race time of 6:15. Directions & parking info at events page.

News from the President:
New Balance, Delaware sponsors PCVRC
Part of our effort to improve the club involves raising funds so we can promote events and provide more services to members and the local running community. We’re working out details of a sponsorship program and are happy to announce that New Balance (Brandywine & Christiana stores) has presented PCVRC with a $500 donation.

Store manager Jamie Graham (a Certified Pedorthist) has also agreed to offer all PCVRC members a 20% discount at both locations! Just mention that you’re a member and they will confirm your name in their database. Jamie specializes in fitting you in the proper shoe and sometimes runs with us at Delcastle on Thursday evenings.

We’re seeking additional sponsors, who will receive the benefits of links on our website, logo on the DDC race shirt, a “Links for runners” ad in our
eBulletin and more. A “PCVRC Sponsorship” PDF will be distributed soon. If
you know of a potential sponsor, just forward the info to them or contact Ray with any questions.

Delaware Marathon recognizes club’s assistance
Club members (& DE Marathon running festival organizers) Wayne Kursh and Joel Schiller recently presented PCVRC with a $250 check “in thanks for our help in making the event run smoothly.” Thank you again to all of you who volunteered to load water into containers, stuff runner packets, work as course marshals, and offered other forms of assistance!

McCorq’s Handicapped 5K Challenge
McCorq’s Handicapped 5K Challenge will be in three short weeks. Send in your best 5K time of past year. All the details are available at the events page.

Past week’s race results:

In the Kids Fund 5K, Matt Cutrona was the overall winner in 17:38 and Lynn Knothe was the female winner in 20:10. Tom Jermyn was 4th overall and Epi Camacho was sixth overall.

Mark Vilardo was second overall at the Classic Catering 5K at the Rusty Rudder in 15:54.

From Theresa Kauffman:
I’m happy to report that on Saturday I ran the Beach to Beacon 10k [aka Joanie’s race because Joan Benoit trained on these roads in her youth]. [It]… has always been a “dream” race for me.

The temp. was 53 and ideal race conditions…the best in 11 years…the course and finish is spectacular. I understand the lighthouse was the first commissioned in the US-also the most photographed. With the ocean back-drop it was just breathtaking. It is also very competitive. Women’s winner ran a 29.55 and the top five men ran 27s. If you think the Masters are tough here..check out the results.

The race awards top 5 in each ag and I was lucky (by 8 seconds) to capture 5th place 45-49 in 43.20. The awards are based on CHIP time. My age-grade was 78.1% which is my highest ever. I guess the Maine air helped!

It is tough to get in.., I found that out the more I talked with people…. Also, Joan Benoit Samuelson told the crowd that she thanked her husband Scott for volunteering as HE DID NOT get in with regular or lottery registration. Now that says it all….

Personal note on the Around the Lake Marathon:
In my unkind review of this race in the last bulletin, I did not mention that there were no marathon finisher medals, that there were only awards for the top three male and female finishers with no age group awards, and the results did not include the ages of the finishers. So it has taken a while to ascertain where I would have finished in an age group, by finding the ages of the pre-registered people and matching those people to the names of the finishers, and that’s assuming that someone in my age group faster than me didn’t walk up the day of the race and register. Given all that, I would have finished 2nd in a 60-69 AG or first in a 65-69 AG. Small consultation! Mark Lozier believes he would not have placed in a 50-59 AG.

Next Club 5K Fun Run: Fri 8/13 at Glasgow Park
Come and bring guests to our free 6pm Friday Fun Run (the evening before Old New Castle 5 Miler). See Events page for
details and to RSVP if you’ll be running or just attending.

More participants at Wed & Thurs group runs…
If you can ever make it to Delcastle at 6pm Wed or Thurs, go for it! We expect to have additional runners (and walkers too) as participants in The Wellness Community’s “Strides for Hope” program get ready for their marathon or half marathon at Rock’n’Roll Las Vegas in December. There will be new runners who appreciate advice as well as people to train with. Visit
http://www.wellnessdelaware.org/events/strides.php for information.

McCorq’s Fun Run Handicap Challenge will be, as always, the Thursday before Labor Day weekend, which is September 2. This year there will be a slight and, hopefully, fun twist to the course. The idea started in my attempt to get the start and finish to occur in front of my house, rather than in front of a certain cranky neighbor’s house. Details in a later e-mail. However, as past participants know, the handicap for the race is based on your best 5K time in the past 12 months. So its not too early to start letting me know the time you are going to use.

Race Results:
Matt Cutrona was second overall in the Kid Shelleen’s 5K in 18:02.
Theresa Kauffman was the overall female winner in the Kid’s health 5K in 20:55.
Mark Vilardo was the overall winner in the Venus on the Half-Shell 5K in 15:37 and Lynn Knothe was the overall female winner in 18:41. Mark broke his own age-group state record by seven seconds.

In what was almost a family clean sweep at the Dewey Beach Liquors 5K at the Cork, Mark Vilardo was the overall winner in 16:06, while wife Sheila was second overall female in 21:09. Mark and Sheila are our hosts for the BBQ on Saturday.

Somerville Road Runners Around the Lake Marathon
Mark Lozier – 4:03:45
Dave McCorquodale – 4:21:15

Review: Mark is trying to re-qualify for Boston and is pointing toward the Mohawk-Hudson River Marathon on October 10 for his serious attempt. We went to this marathon as a training run.

It was “interesting”, but I wouldn’t do it again. With this race starting at 7 P.M> on Friday evening, there were areas that were poorly lit. The asphalt sidewalk portions were rippled and even a few curbs, so when it got dark I found myself scuffling along. I ran in the street as much as the shoulders and traffic would allow to avoid that. The first couple of laps, where there was concrete, I ran on a little single track dirt path worn in the grass for softer landing. But I noticed small rocks sticking out, so I avoided that after dark. I suspect one guy tried running there and tripped. As I went by on the sixth lap, another runner called out that the guy’s face was bleeding.

The course had an initial section of .85 miles and then eight loops of 3.17. The timing mat caught our times at the end of each loop.

Another loop course problem – lots of 50 states slowpokes and relay walkers, for the 12 or 24 hour events, who would be two or three abreast on the sidewalk. Ignorant! The weather(about 74 at start, dry and breezy) was great compared to lately, but I have read and agree that anything above 60 degrees affects your body and slows you down some.

Recommendation: Avoid this one.

Scott Hodukavich: BOMF 20 in 24
The following is an account written by club member in exile (to South Carolina) Scott Hodukovich of his participation in the 24 race in Philadelphia last weekend. Many of the names referenced on Traildawgs

A final thanks to everyone that contributed in some way, even just an
encouraging word, to the Back on My Feet 24 hour run to benefit those less fortunate. I had a goal of $500 in contributions to BOMF and ended up with $656. Don’t forget – it’s a 501c, so donations are tax-deductable!
And special thanks to everyone that came up at the race to show their
support – was very much appreciated!

I’m better (but not much) with pictures than with writing, so here are
pictures from the race. They are also posted on FB, but this photoshow has
music and you can make it full screen if you want:
http://smilebox.com/playEmail/4d5467774d5467324e7a6c384d7a6b324e4441354d6a6b 3d0d0a&sb=1

I decided to run BOMF back in March when I was out in Philly for work and
running the course on my own on a rainy day. It seemed like a nice enough
course, with the rowers on the river and all. I knew Jen Erickson had run
it and I’d seen the Runners World videos of Jen Van Allen & Keith Straw.
So I was inspired by all them. I’ve never run 100 miles in 24 hours
before, so this seemed like a good place to try. It’s all flat – how hard
can it be? I did not know anyone else running it, but seemed like a good
excuse to come back for a visit.

It was a pleasant surprise to find out within the last month that 4 other
Traildawgs had also signed up. Jen Erickson was back along with Dave Resler
& Billy Oosterom. Even Jeff Englebrecht signed up again at the last
minute. They all sent out writeups to the Dawg list. I can’t add too much
more, but I will say it was a genuine pleasure to run with all of them.
Just wished I could have kept up…. Thanks to Dave for driving up and
back to Philly from Newark! If it was up to me, I would have slept all day
in the Azelia garden up there….

After I signed up & committed to raising $ for this race, was less
pleasantly surprised when I learned Laurie Reinhart was running Vermont.
Happy for Laurie, but wish I could have been there too. She crewed for me
at VT (along with Pete McLaughlin). She had a crew already lined up and
she had an amazing run. 24:37 – wow! VT is not exactly flat….. The
only one in our group who came close to that pace was Jen, who ran 11 1/2
laps or 94 miles in 24 hours. Bill, Jeff & I got in 10 loops each (84
miles). Dave did 9 loops. Jen, Jeff, Dave & Bill all beat their previous
BOMF distances. I still did not come close to 100m in 24h, but was a good
experience nevertheless.

Thanks to J-Lo for letting me hang out there all weekend! (J-Lo is getting
into exterras – Don’t tell the tabloids!)

Big, Big thanks to Roxanne & Dave Strine for driving out to Philly &
returning my cooler – filled with ice yet! You two are life savers…

Thanks to my Vegan Ironman friend Jen Clark who rode her bike out to come
lend support. Of course, all the Traildawgs too (Fred, Eva, Hunt, Steve,
and super speedy Angus). Was nice to hear from Greta overnight by phone.

Rebel Rich Symanski caught me by surprise on lap 5 when he ran up with a
cooler full of beer & gatorade – what more could you ask for? He even
cleared it with the local bike cops… As soon as I started lap 6, Rebels
Dan & Smarty show up and paced me in their van for a mile. Officially
you’re not allowed pacers on bikes, but don’t think I ever heard anyone say
cars weren’t allowed…. Smarty was back again at 5;30 am along with
Sharon for the pajama run. So was Tom Jermyn. And then Andrea came out
of nowhere too. Of course, newly married Tex was there all night working,
and I met Amy too. There were Rebels all over the place….

Columbia runners couldn’t be there, but they’ve been supportive in all kinds
of ways too. I also picked up a lot from Lisa “50 miles in 50 states”
Smith-Batchen who taught me the importance of keeping good posture and a
good stride in your walk breaks to improve you time.

Always a pleasure to see Ron & Helene Horn! Man, I miss Pretzel City
races…. There is nothing like a Half-Wit Half Marathon in South Carolina.

Hopefully I haven’t bored you all too much. Not sure what’s next. Maybe working with Greta to do her first 100! It’s just a number…..(OK it is a darn big one)
– Scott

Mapquest location

Input needed for PCVRC club t-shirt
New club tee-shirt coming! The club needs your input on the design. At the last board meeting, it was decided that the club would design a new tee-shirt. It will be a gray shirt with green lettering and/or logo. The logo will be smaller and placed over the heart area. However, we would like to know members opinions on a couple of questions. Attached is a word document which has two drawings of the logo we have been using and a small version of the older club logo.

1. Do you prefer the logo we have been using, the older logo or something new?
2. If you prefer a new logo, do you have a design for it. Don’t worry. We will consult a graphic designer a new design is preferred and if no club member submits anything.
3. Is it OK if the club tee shirt has the name and website of the club on the back of the shirt? Or would you prefer the shirt have nothing on the back

The running of “The Judge 5K”.
About 15 runners and a couple of walkers gathered at Dirk Sweigart’s house in Drummond Hill last Friday evening to run an easy loop around the Judge Morris State Park grounds. For those who haven’t done it before, the loop is a bit over three miles long. Leaving from access near the development, the first half is mostly downhill and the second half is mostly uphill, whether one initially goes clockwise or counter-clockwise. Since it was in the 80s and humid, it was a bit tough although Theresa Kauffman had no trouble doing the thing twice. Club Secretary Jerry Herman got the “bloody-well-done” award after catching his foot on a root and skinning his right knee.

Dirk was a wonderful host, serving up burgers, dogs and beer along with a few side dishes people brought. Prez Ray treated us to an improved retelling on “The Great Pennsylvania Pot Bust”, which will soon be recorded by Arlo Guthrie for his Alice’s Restaurant Revisited album. And a splendid time was had by all. Most hope Dirk can host another get-together although we are also hoping that a huge bulldozer flattens out the terrain.

Race Results:
Epi Camacho was second overall in the Prevent Child Abuse 5K at Rockford Park in 19:16.
Mark Vilardo was second overall in Catherine Rooney’s 5K for Ulster Project in 15:33. Lynn Knothe was first overall female in 19:46.

Theresa Kauffman was first female runner in Mimi’s Run in 21:36 (after two loops of Judge Morris the evening before).
Mark Vilardo was the winner of the North Beach 5K in 15:54. Lynn Knothe was the female winner in 19:20.

Race result from Theresa Kauffman:
We ran a 10k on Wolf Island in Canada. Its a very scenic and hilly 10k along Lake Ontario on July 4th. I ran a 44:47 and was overall female. Lee also ran and was 2nd in his age group with a 43:14.

7/1/10: Results from Double Trouble 15K, Upcoming Events

Last week’s results:
In the Race for Time 5K, held at 8:30 a.m., Saturday on the Wilmington riverfront, Mark Vilardo was the overall winner in 15:47. Lynn Knothe was the female winner in 20:00. Carole Feole was first female master in 22:22. Others who ran under 18 minutes were Greg Cauller, Matt Cutrona and Tom Jermyn. Apparently not satisfied with his 4th place finish in that race, Greg Cauller was the overall winner in 18:49 in the 5K for Education which started and hour and 15 minutes after the other race also at the riverfront.

Kelly Horowitz was the female winner of the Green Turtle 5K in Ocean City, MD in 20:28.

From Jack Horowitz: Paul Schweitzer has re-started the “Pump and Run” competition which is an event that combines weight lifting and running. The more “reps” you lift, the more time is deducted from your run. We swept the event at the Green Turtle with the Lovensheimer women dominating:

Kelly- 1st place 35-39 with adjusted time of 17:12
Kristen Stump (niece) 1st place 19-24, 20:33
June Lovensheimer (mother) 1st place 70+ 41:00

Jack doesn’t mention it, but he won the men’s competition.

From Theresa Kauffman: I ran the Baltimore Women’s Classic on Sunday. It was a great event with over 2500 women , a great course on the Inner Harbor and wonderful venue. I was 15th overall and 1st in my age-group in a 21.39.

Double Trouble 15K
Here is what Rich Szymanski gathered:

On a very hot and humid day PCVRC trail team had a great day. Besides the heat, humidity, millions of rocks, roots and whatever nature could throw at us, we all came out alive and well.

Of course some of us did not come out unscathed. I took a head first dive and completed a full rotation flip. The guy behind me let out a scream of support by saying “that was F*#@^* awesome” and jumped over me and kept on going. Tom Steenkamer took a face plant and required 4 stitches to his chin,he also suffered scrapes on his knees and elbows. Tom has been a great asset to our team and I enjoy seeing him at the races. I also heard Epi went down but can not confirm this (forgot to ask). After the race was over, I could see multiple casualties. This is definitely the bloodiest race of the trail series.

Results are in from USATYF on the Double Trouble 15K Trail race. Overall, Pike Creek Valley Running Club has increased it’s hold on second place. (Unfortunately, the Philadelphia Track Club, an ironic name for people excelling at trail running, has strengthened its hold on first.

In the individual age groups, Josh Loren has a one point lead in the Open Male, Tom Jermyn trails by one point in the Masters Male, and Fred Shufflebarger has a six point lead in the Senior Male category.

Summer Solstice 10 Miler in Northville, MI
This editor was in Detroit last week and I had found a 10 Mile race to run before going out there – the Summer Solstice 10 Miler in Northville, Michigan. It was a new event, added to an existing 10K and 5K. The last mile went through the main street of Northville, where a lot of tents were set up for a festival, which would occur later in the day. In all three events there were over 2,400 runners. I found it annoying that the 10 miler did not have age group awards because “it’s a new event”, while the 10K and 5K did. I wrote the director that usually the most serious runners do the longest races. Sure enough! While I ran 1:31:47 in this quite hilly course and finished third in my age group, my per mile pace was only one second slower than the single man in my age group who ran and “won” in the 10K. I noticed comments online from veteran runners who had participated in these event before. They were not pleased that the 10K, which started 45 minutes after the 10 miler, joined together at mile seven for the ten milers (about mile three for the 10Kers). This meant fast 10K people had to weave through slower 10 mile runners. Conversely, it was a bit deflating to be passed by so many runners that late in a race. Another comment mentioned the common finishing line for all events with entailed such problems as competitive 5K runners having to weave around back of the pack 10K runners who were holding hands as they approached the finish, just happy to be completing such a distance.

Doug Kurtis, 58, wore #2 and ran 1:04 in the event. This is a summary of his running achievements: Doug Kurtis the former Race Director for the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank International Marathon is the world record holder for most career sub 2:20 marathons (76) and most marathon victories (39). Doug is a five time Olympic Trial Qualifier 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996. He was voted into the RRCA Hall of Fame in 1998 and Michigan Runner of the Year – 1985 and 1990. Doug coached two 2000 Olympic Trial Marathon Qualifiers.
