1/27/11: Winter Fun Run, UofD Running, Banquet Form

Winter Run 5K 1/30 10am *LOCATION CHANGE*
Due to heavy snowfall, our 5K fun run this Sunday will be at Delcastle Rec Area (instead of Carousel Park, where we’ll run in warmer weather). It will be followed by socializing over lunch or brunch at Ruby Tuesday’s on Limestone Road. This is a free event for members AND non-members, so bring friends!!! Park near tennis parking entrance (our usual location). It is a
1.75 mile loop. We’ll start together at 10:10, so try to be on time. Run as many laps as you’re comfortable with.
Contact Josh Loren at to give us an idea of number.

Help Needed for DDC 15K
After many years of an outstanding job as Race Director of the Delaware Distance Classic (Oct 9 this year), Dave Farren is stepping aside to allow others to take charge. This has been our club’s most important event for over 28 years and we need assistance for both race day volunteers and race committee members to make all of the necessary arrangements for the event to
run smoothly. It’s a great opportunity to get involved in an activity that helps the club and fellow runners.

The committee will likely hold several meetings leading up to race day. Dave
will guide us through the process to ensure a successful transition and
experienced race coordinators Joel Schiller and Jim Steele have offered to
be involved. But we need more help, so contact Ray asap (even if you’re
already a regular DDC volunteer) to let us know if you can assist on race
day and/or play some kind of role on the committee.

Instructions to join/renew USATF ($30 per person)
Join USATF to be part of our team in Road and/or Off Road series races. When you enter your information, you must include our club number (0025 or 25) for you to be recorded on our team. Register online at
https://www.usatf.org/membership/application/
(schedule for both series are in last bulletin in “News” area of our site)

UofD & Coach Fischer
New club member Mike DiGennaro is leading the re-naming of the Tuesday evening workings at the U. of DE track or fieldhouse for which Jim Fischer has freely given his coaching expertise over the years. Henceforth, the meetings will be known as The Fischer Running Club. Next Tuesday area runners are encouraged to gather at the fieldhouse for a group fun run, either at the outdoor track or on area roads to celebrate the continuation of this tradition with a new name.

Within the past week, the News-Journal published two more well-written articles, showing that not only was the discontinuation of the men’s outdoor track and cross-country programs by the University of Delaware unnecessary, but that this will have a negative impact on running at the high school level within Delaware.

Pike Creek Valley Running Club sets Annual Awards Banquet
From Social Coordinator, Rachel Bleacher:
This year the Pike Creek Valley Running Club’s annual awards banquet will be held at the Ed Oliver Golf Club in Wilmington on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 6:00 pm until 9 p.m. There will be cocktails and appetizers followed by a plated meal and the award ceremony. The cost per person will be $30.00 for club members and $40.00 for non-club members. Please RSVP by filling out the banquet form that can be found attached to this E-bulletin and on the pcvrc website. Please RSVP by February 20, 2011. If you have questions regarding this event please feel free to contact me at . I look forward to seeing everyone there and having a fantastic night!

The guest speaker will be one of the leaders from the organization Back on My Feet, to which the club contributed a donation from the money raised through the Delaware Distance Classic. For those not familiar with it, “Back on My Feet, founded by Anne Mahlum in Philadelphia in 2007, is a nonprofit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of homeless populations by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem.” Club member Austin Gee worked for this group for a while when he moved to Philadelphia.

Award Recipients announced:
Deciding whom should receive awards this year proved to be a difficult task as there were more people deserving of awards than usual. Due to costs, the club needs to limit major award plaques to less than ten per year. In a vote by the board, eight recipients were chosen for those awards. Other members will be given a Notable Achiever Pike Creek glass.

Major Award recipients: Chris James, Theresa Kauffman, Lynn Knothe, Josh Loren, Dave McCorquodale, Dan Simmons, Tom Steenkamer and Mark Vilardo.

Notable Achievers: Epi Camacho, Carle Feole, Dave Farren, Kelly Horowitz, Tom Jermyn, Claire Neilan, Adam Shilling, Fred Shufflebarger and Dirk Sweigart.

Hopefully, many award recipients will be able to attend.

1/20/11: Banquet Date, Award Nominations, UD cuts XC, DDC, USATF Races

PCVRC Awards Banquet is February 26
SAVE THE DATE!!! The club has confirmed the awards banquet date. It’s Saturday, Feb. 26, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Ed Oliver Country Club on Dupont Road, just west of Wilmington. We are in the process of determining the menu, inviting a guest speaker, and voting on awards winners (still not too late to nominate someone). Details and sign-ups forms to be out soon.

U. of DE Axes Men’s Indoor Track and XC after 2011
The running community in Delaware has just suffered a huge blow as the University of Delaware has decided to cut the men indoor track and cross-country teams, adding to the loss of the outdoor track team last year.
News Journal Article

In a horrifying nexus of sports-for-the-sake-of-making-money with the worst possible interpretation of an equitable way to apply Title XI rules, the U. of DE has decided to cut men’s running programs in order to bring the percentage of women athletes closer to matching the percentage of female students. It’s addition by subtraction. Instead of interpreting the Title XI rules to mean that the number of opportunities to participate in athletics must be proportional, the U of DE has decided to make a literal interpretation. This calculation all starts with the fact that there is no equivalent woman’s sport to match the male football team, which immediately consumes about 80 scholarship spots.

Never mind that the U. of DE is supported by our taxes, that athletes in these programs come to a larger extent than other sports from Delaware, that many of these athletes go on to coach at area schools, that running athletes have some of the best GPAs of all athletes. The talent will now go out of state and Delaware will be the poorer because of it. Lastly, never mind that running can become a lifetime activity with all the known physical and mental benefits for those who do it. Meanwhile, can anyone think of former “jock” athletes who became overweight and out of shape once the glory days were over?

Annual Awards
Last call to nominate a fellow club member (or yourself) for an award. Reply to this eBulletin or email by Jan 25 with your name, nominee name and list of accomplishments for someone to be Runner of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Volunteer of the Year or Outstanding Achievement.

Winter Run 5K 1/30 10am
We’re planning a 5K fun run at Carousel Park for Sunday morning, Jan 30 to be followed by socializing over lunch or brunch just up the street at Ruby Tuesday’s or another local place. It’s a fun run on the beautiful cross country course, so if you have trail shoes, wear’em. Maybe we’ll even be lucky enough to have some snow to make things interesting. This is a free event for members AND non-members, so bring friends.
Contact Josh Loren at to give us an idea of number or
especially if you can assist in any way.

Renew Membership
For those who haven’t yet renewed their club membership, now is the time. Individual or family membership is $25 for the year. If none of your personal information has changed and you signed a membership form last year, simply send in your check, made out to PCVRC, to PCVRC, P.O.Box 3259, Wilmington, DE 19804. If any personal information has changed in the last year, please download, fill out and enclose a new form: http://www.pcvrc.com/pdf/PCVRCMembership.pdf

We will not be mailing the new New Balance club tech shirts, so plan to either pick one up at a coming club event (Winter Run, Banquet, other group run) or contact Ray (633-1482) to make arrangements.

New Club member Sheri Herrmann was featured in the Delaware Health section of the News-Journal on Tuesday: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011110117041

Club members Jim Durkin, John Schultz and Dan Weinstein were race volunteers. The nephew of John and Lori Culnane, Kierkan Tuntivate was 11th overall with a time of 1:04:46 at the age of 13! The lowest state age group record is 18 and under, but if there were a separate category for 13 and under, this would surely be a state record. Olympian Vic Zwolak set another 70-74 age group state record in 1:18:19, breaking the reocrd held by club member Don Monagle.

USATF Mid-Atlantic Award Lunch
The USATF Mid-Atlantic Award Lunch will be held at noon on Saturday, January 29 at the Central Baptist Church in Wayne, PA. Registration is $25/person and seating is available for 180. Asking $15,000. Becky’s phone is 798-3165. Speak clearly because Becky’s hearing is not as good as it used to be. You can also consider contacting Ralph McKinney.

12/13/10: December Race Results, Rehoboth Marathon & Half

Reindeer Run and Romp 5K
Race Results: We are coming into the cold, slow season of running, but there are a few races still occurring. At the Reindeer Run and Romp 5K in Newark last Friday evening age group awards were won by Tom Jermyn, Tom Steenkamer, Dan Simmons, Jim Durkin and April Hubbard. It’s great to see that April was able to participate in this event.

Tom Steenkamer ran 17:34, which, I believe, is a PR. Tom is at that magical time in his running life when PRs seem to come with almost every succeeding race.

Rehoboth Seashore Marathon or Half-Marathon
Rehoboth Seashore Marathon results:
3:12:51 Adam Shilling, Boston Qualifier and Person Best
3:22:09 Dirk Sweigart, BQ and 4th 50-54
3:55:37 Mark Holliday
3:56:56 Mary Holliday BQ and 2nd 55-59

Rehoboth Seashore Half-Marathon results:
1:16:17 Josh Loren, 1st 30-34 and 2nd Overall
1:21:57 Tom Jermyn, 1st 45-49 and 5th OA
1:30:56 Lee Kauffman, 2nd 50-54
1:33:10 Karl Kalbacher, 2nd 45-49
1:36:35 Wes Stafford
1:39:20 Rich Szymanski
1:48:42 Jim Steele
1:53:21 Claire Neilan
1:53:39 Paul Schweizer
2:00:19 Jordan Fridman
2:00:21 Tricia Szymanski
2:05:51 Ray Feehery

Due to injuries Racheel and mother Gail Bleacher and Paula Jermyn, who was training for her first half-marathon, were unable to participate.

Club vice-president Claire Neilan presented a check for $250 on behalf of Pike Creek Valley Running Club to Dana Casanave, who has been running marathons every week since January 24 to raise money for orphans of women who had AIDS in South Africa. Her original quest was to run 52 marathons in 52 weeks, but since she has run two marathons in one weekend three times, Rehoboth will be her 50th marathon and she may run 55 before she finishes on Jan. 15.

I first became aware of Dana when she passed me in the B & A Marathon in March, with a sign pinned to her back about her quest and her website (http://www.52beginnings.com/). I’ve since seen her at four other marathons, the latest being the Northern Central Trail Marathon, in which she again passed me late in the race and finished a couple minutes faster. Of course, I didn’t immediately get on a plane, fly to Florida, and run the Space Coast Marathon the next day as she did.

I have followed her blog all year. After running a 4:06 at B & A, her times slowed, sometimes to over five hours, as the weather warmed up and I thought all the marathoning was going to injure her. But as the weather cooled, her times started to improve. She ran a 4:03 at Fox City. Then in October, she started doubling up. I want to know how she has adapted to being able to do this and, during the Northern Central race, I commented that she ought to write a book since her blog is well-written, moving, and entertaining.

Anyway, I suggested to the board that the charity she is running for be one of the ones that we give a donation to this year. I’m glad the board agreed. I have never seen anyone before dedicate so much running to such a compassionate cause. Dana is a role model for others to emulate.

Registration Alert
On-line registration for the Annapolis 10 Mile Run, which always sells out very quickly, will open one month earlier next year on May 1, instead of June 1. The date is the last Sunday of August (28th). The registration link will be here http://annapolisstriders.org/ when registration opens

Politics in Running
I know most of us use running as an escape from some of the nasty issues reality throws at us. Running is pure, simple, straight forward. What can politics possibly have to do with it? Unfortunately, when it comes to elite competition, quite a bit! Please check out this article posted by the founder of marathonguide.com about the shameful ruling by USATF that American citizens can’t compete in USA championship races unless they have been citizens for a full two years. This is plain discrimination and has no place in running. I hope in some small way our club, through the regional Mid-Atlantic USATF organization, can apply some pressure on the national USATF which made this ruling. Read the article and follow the discussion at: ttp://www.runnersworld.com/community/forums/runner-communities/masters/new-usatf-rule-restricting-can-run-usa-championship-races?plckFindPostKey=Cat:Runner%20CommunitiesForum:648106477Discussion:f7352725-b3cd-4eda-bfc5-23a843e73912Post:1aae8270-7b74-485c-a684-aa848332c3a9
