PCVRC Racing Team Update

The busy fall for the Mid-Atlantic USATF Grand Prix and Off-Road series finished up at the end of November with the Philadelphia Marathon weekend and the Delaware Open Cross Country Championship. PCVRC fielded strong teams for all of the events, finishing 3rd in the Grand Prix and 2nd in the Off-Road series. The 2022 series sees many of the races contested in the fall of 2021 returning to their regular spring dates for 2022. We also forgot to mention Sarah Rusk in the last newsletter, who set a state age group record at the Boston Marathon!

Club members turned in several outstanding performances at the Philadelphia Marathon weekend. In the Dietz and Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon Rob Mason set another state record in the process of winning the 65-69 age groups. Betty Olmstead placed 3rd in 75-79 and Anthony Swierzbinski placed 5th in 35-39. The club’s largest contingent of racers was in the Rothman 8k. Allison Emmons continued her outstanding year of racing by winning the master’s division. Mike DiGennaro and Greg Cauller placed 2nd in age group, Matthew Cutrona 3rd in age group, and Liz Swierzbinksi and Gerald Herman placed 4th in age group. At Sunday’s AACR Philadelphia Marathon, Abby Dean set another state age group record in the process of winning her age group.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving a group of brave runners battled the cold and wind at the hilly Brandywine Creek State Park in the Delaware Open Cross Country Championship. A strong performance by the team vaulted us from 4th to 2nd in the series standings. Mike DiGennaro and Allison Emmons led the way by winning the masters divisions. Matthew Cutrona, Dave Wiechecki, and Lynn Knothe all placed in their respective age groups.

PCVRC has numerous runners who placed in the overall Grand Prix and won age groups in the 2021 series. Congratulations to Abby Dean (1st), Allison Emmons (2nd), Greg Cauller (6th), Robert Mason (8th), and Matthew Cutrona (9th) for placing top ten in the individual Grand Prix for 2021! Additionally, Angelina Spadaccini (1st), Allison Emmons (1st), Abby Dean (1st), Betty Olmstead (1st), Mark Hannagan (1st), Anthony Swierzbinski (1st), Greg Cauller (1st), Matthew Cutrona (2nd), Robert Mason (2nd), and Gerald Herman (2nd) placed top 3 in age groups for the series. Andrea Rubinoff and Lynn Knothe each placed second in age group in the Off-Road Series. Details are being finalized for an informal awards luncheon following the Fireside Frostbite 5 Miler in Ambler.

Now is a great time to join USATF and participate in the Grand Prix or Off-Road series! You can join USATF by going to https://www.usatf.org/ and selecting Pike Creek Valley Running Club as your club affiliation. A list of the Grand Prix races is https://www.mausatf.com/grandprix-events/ and the Off-Road races is https://www.mausatf.com/off-road-events/.

Holiday party

Social Activities

Holiday Social – The annual PCVRC holiday party was held on Wednesday December 15 at Klondike Kates on Main Street in Newark, DE. There was a great turnout of more than 60 members, who enjoyed food and drink along with fun raffles and giveaways. Members used the opportunity to catch up with friends and reminisce from the past year and many took the advantage of the time to renew annual membership for 2022.

Cupid’s Charity – Last year, several members of the PCVRC had a great time at this wonderful event to support Cupid’s Charity, a fantastic cause to find a cure for neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a genetic disorder of the peripheral nervous system that causes tumors to grow on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. Club members dressed their Valentine’s Day best for a short run and scavenger hunt in Wilmington and then relaxed with a drink afterwards at Maker’s Alley. We’re doing it again on Saturday, February 26th! The venue will be House of Laffs on Union Street in Wilmington. Click here to register and join the PCVRC Team! For details, click HERE.

38th Delaware Distance Classic a Huge Success

The 38th Delaware Distance Classic (DDC) was back in full force after one year absence due to Covid.  The race was held on October 24 and benefitted the Nemours Fund for Children’s Health, the Delaware Nature Society and the Pike Creek Valley Running Club.  The weather was nearly perfect for running and a major success with 141 runners in the 15K and 44 runners in the 5K.  We are grateful to the 50+ volunteers who took time out of their Sunday morning to help with parking, registration, handing out food and water and keeping runners on course and safe. Alison McCann, DDC race director, with help from Dirk Sweigart, organized a phenomenal event.  Course was flat, dry, fast and cool with many of the top runners in the region participating including a number of other USATF clubs.  With great support from the RDC, DEEC and our trusty volunteers, we were able to hold a great race and fund-raise for local charities and our club.  Thanks to all who helped or ran (and those who did both)!   A special thank you to Betty Fitzpatrick, Karen Mitchell, Clay Shaw, Alison McCann and Ray Christensen for taking photos of the race. Very likely you are in one or more of the photos so check them out: HERE.

PCVRC Racing Team Update

The USATF Grand Prix and Off-Road series have been in full swing this fall with regularly scheduled races as well as pandemic delayed events for a total of 7 races since Labor Day!  PCVRC is currently in second place in the Grand Prix and fourth place in the Off-Road standings.  If you are thinking about joining USATF, now is a great time!  New memberships to USATF between now and the end of the year are good for all of 2022.  The final events of the series are the upcoming Philadelphia Marathon weekend and the Delaware Open Cross Country Championships.  We hope to see you at the races!

Allison Emmons continued her fantastic fall of racing as the overall female champion at the Main Line Run on September 12.  Greg Cauller placed 3rd in the 60-69 age group and Betty Olmstead was honored as the oldest female participant.  The race also served as Robert Mason’s final tune up, and confidence booster, before his state record performance at the Berlin Marathon.  The Broad Street run was postponed from its usual May date to the second weekend in October.  Mike DiGennaro and Allison Emmons both were overall Master’s champions, and Abby Dean was 3rd female master.  Both Allison and Abby set state age group records in the process.  Matthew Cutrona and Betty Olmstead both placed top 5 in their age groups and Anthony Swierzbinski continued his year of setting PRs.
Delaware runners

Our Delaware Distance Classic is also part of the series, and serves as the Mid-Atlantic 15k Championship.  Our own Abby Dean was overall female champion, breaking her own state record in the process.  Her husband, Matthew Cutrona, won the accompanying 5k, which is not part of the Grand Prix.  Mark Hannagan, Anthony Swierzbinski, Pete LoBianco, Greg Cauller, Bill Rose, Rob Mason, Angelina Spadaccini, Katrina Holloway, and Betty Olmstead all placed top 3 in age group for a large Pike Creek contingent!  Rob Mason put his name on the state records for the second time this fall.  The penultimate race weekend of the Grand Prix was the Cooper Norcross Run the Bridge over the Ben Franklin Bridge in Camden.  All three Pike Creek ladies who competed set state age group records!  Congratulations Allison Emmons, Abby Dean, and Betty Olmstead!  Allison was 4th female overall and 1st master and Abby Dean was 3rd female Master.  Greg Cauller and Matthew Cutrona both placed second in age group.

It has been more difficult to field teams this fall in the Off Road series due to scheduling conflicts.  Lynn Knothe was the only member to compete at the Camp Innabah Fall Classic.  No club members were able to attend the Evansburg 10 Mile due to conflicts.  A full squad did participate at the Tyler Arboretum 10k.  Luke Nigro, David Long, Carol Giampietro, Andrea Rubinoff, and Lynn Knothe all navigated the very muddy trails and higher than usual stream crossings after a day of heavy rains.
Racing team
There were also some amazing accomplishments at non-USATF team events worth mentioning. PCVRC represented at the Boston Marathon with finishers including Alison McCann, Greg Cauller, Natalie Lutz, Mike Brown, Kristen Henry, Andy Jakubowitch, Erin Jakubowitch, Laura Anne, Jenifer Evans Besten, Mardiny Ung, Steve Sinko and Kelly Horowitz.  Mike Janis ran a personal best 3:14 at the Chicago marathon, which was also a hot one.  Randy Jones set a 100-mile course record of 22 hours and 46 minutes at the Mountaineer Rumble on November 5!

Boston party

Social Activities

Boston Sendoff – PCVRC hosted a Boston sendoff social on October 6 at Grain on Main in Newark.  Approximately 30 members enjoyed food and drink to socialize and wish our Boston qualifiers as well as those running Chicago Marathon and Broad Street Run good luck in their upcoming races.

Holiday Social scheduled for December 15 – The annual PCVRC holiday party will be held on Wednesday December 15 at Klondike Kates on Main Street in Newark, DE from 6:00-9:00pm.  There will be food and cash bar with raffles and giveaways.  Always a good time, this is an excellent opportunity to catch up with friends and reminisce from the past year.  This is also the time the renew annual membership dues for 2022 for just $25.

Spotlight on the PCVRC Racing Team – We invite you to join the fun and competition!

What is USATF (usatf.org)? USATF stands for USA Track & Field. It is the governing body for track and field, long distance running, and race walking in the United States, USATF provides critical leadership roles and functions in the sport including hosting Olympic Trial events, national track and field championships, multiple national road race championships, multiple Master’s road race championships, mountain/ultra/trail championships, and grassroots events at the Junior Olympic level. In addition to providing championship running events, USATF also establishes the rules for the sport, sanctions events, and certifies courses for record purposes.

On the local level, PCVRC is a part of the Mid-Atlantic USATF (mausatf.com). Each year our club participates in a road race series and a trail race series, competing against several other local running clubs. Each of these races is scored using an age-graded score to try to rank performances accounting for age and gender. A complete scoring team has five members, one of whom must be a female. By participating in these series, our club can win some money for the club. In addition to the club competition, there is also an individual portion of each series. Awards are given at the end of each season to the overall top 10 in the road series, and top 3 in age groups in both the road and trail series. A full listing of events, and current team and individual standings, can be found at: https://www.mausatf.com/long-distance/grand-prix/ for the road series
https://www.mausatf.com/long-distance/off-road-running-series/ for the trail series.

Our racing teams needs you! Any club member that joins USATF can participate and represent the club. The cost to join USATF is $40, which members enjoy discounted entry to series races, plus, members of the club who are members of USATF and compete in 4 races, of either series, receive a complimentary club membership for the following year! These races are also another venue for socialization as club members often meet up for lunch or tailgating afterwards. In fact, some club members who belong to USATF have even combined going to a National Championship event into vacations! Please contact Lynn Knothe () or Tom Steenkamer for more information.
USATF Club XC Championships   Moorestown race 2018

New member, Bill Rose, participated in the difficult Double Trouble 15K at French Creek State Park on August 15 and placed as the second USATF male in the 60+ category.

On August 16, Matthew Cutrona, Greg Cauller, Abby Dean, and Lynn Knothe all participated in the USATF Mountain Running Championship at the Mount Hood Ski Bowl. All of our members brought home national medals! Special congratulations are extended to Abby Dean for placing as the second master overall! Abby Dean, Allison Emmons, Lynn Knothe, Matthew Cutrona, Greg Cauller, Robert Mason, Bill Rose, and Dave Wiechecki ran at the Belmont Plateau Hall of Fame cross country 5k on 8/28/21. The women’s team placed second, the men’s team placed third. Extra special congratulations to Allison Emmons for winning the master’s division (and placing as second woman overall!).

For Your Information

Having just experienced some uncomfortable heat the past few days, the higher effort needed to run is not in your head. Since very few of us stop or even slow down during the summer, especially those training for early fall marathons, see articles on what heat and humidity do and considerations when running HERE, HERE and HERE.

Another peril of summer is getting caught in a surprise thunderstorm because your run was a little longer than expected (maybe you got lost) or forgot to check the weather beforehand. For guidance if (when) this happens to you, click HERE.

Congratulations to our C25K Program Graduates!

Couch 2 5k programLee and Michelle Dresser graciously led a very successful spring edition of the Couch to 5K program at Paper Mill Park on Wednesday evenings for the past 2 months, which culminated with a major achievement for participants, completion of the Humble but Hungry 5K. Special thanks to Lee and Michele, several PCVRC club members who helped make this a fun and rewarding activity and one of our sponsors, Omega Project PT, who led a dynamic stretching session for attendees. Please check the website for more details HERE.

USATF Race Series – Great job PCVRC Team!

Several members of the racing team traveled to Yardley, PA on Memorial Day to participate in the Yardley Memorial Main Street Mile. Following the race, most of enjoyed getting some more miles in along the scenic towpath along the Delaware Canal. Special congratulations to Allison Emmons as the overall female champion, as well as age group winners Abby Dean, Mark Hannagan, and Angelina Spacaccini. Five days later, and about 20 degrees warmer, many team members raced in the Scott Coffee Moorestown 8k. The ladies of PCVRC were not slowed by the unseasonably hot and humid conditions with Abby Dean, Allison Emmons, Carole Feole, and Elizabeth Swierzbinski being the top 4 scorers for the club. The Mid-Atlantic USATF website has been having difficulties, but PCVRC is currently in second place in the road series. The road series will take a break for the summer and will resume with the Main Line 5k in Wayne in September.

On the off-road side of the series, members raced at the always rocky and hilly Coventry Woods 10k. The next race in the off-road series is the Double Trouble 15k at French Creek State Park.

Matthew Cutrona, Abby Dean, and Greg Cauller participated in the Mid-Atlantic Master’s track championships at Millersville University on June 27. Matthew won the 1500 meters and 5000 meters for men 50-59, Abby won the women’s 45-49 5000 meters, and Greg won the 5000 meters, 10000 meters, steeplechase, and javelin throw for men 60-64. With only 3 members participating in the track meet, PCVRC placed 3rd!

5/10/21: Discounts, Socials, Lee Kauffman, C25K, USATF

The spring season is in full swing and hopefully you have been able to enjoy the warmer weather and longer days. With vaccinations more widely available and Covid cases starting to ease, smaller races are being held successfully. We are anticipating some modifications and/or restrictions through 2021, particularly for the traditionally “big” races, but there should be opportunities for those who are flexible.

The club is planning running and social activities with the focus on outdoor gatherings, which affords the opportunity to host larger groups in a safe manner. PCVRC is a social club and very supportive of all our member’s running goals. Most importantly, we have a great time running and welcome runners and walkers of all backgrounds regardless of race, nationality, religion, sexual preference and of all levels of ability from beginner joggers to the highly competitive road racer to marathoners.

USATF Race Series for 2021 is Underway

The Road and Off-Road club competitions are back with most events being conducted due to their smaller field size, while larger races hopefully rescheduled to the fall.

The team participated in the hilly and muddy Looney Leprechaun 10k at Tyler State park on March 13, placing second among USATF teams! Special congratulations go out to Will Steele, Amy Dischler, Greg Cauller, Andrea Rubinoff and Betty Olmstead for placing in their respective age groups. The next race in the off-road series is the Coventry Woods 10k on May 16. Some of our USATF racers enjoyed a well-deserved post-race refuel (below). Additional race information can be found HERE.
USATF
The road series will be kicking off with races on back-to-back weekends starting with the Memorial Main Street Mile in Yardley, PA on May 31. More information is available HERE. This is a new race in the series and a chance to see how fast you can go! The following weekend is the Moorestown 8k in Moorestown, NJ. More information is HERE.

Please note that due to Covid restrictions there is no race day registration for races. Races may limit the field size based on local restrictions.
