DE Marathon Course Marshals Needed
DE Marathon is 5/15 and volunteers are needed in several areas. The most critical need is for course marshals to ensure the safety of runners. We need a minimum of 8 and prefer up to 16 for things to run more smoothly. As in the past 2 years, PCVRC is responsible for a section of Bancroft Parkway, including several busy intersections. We start at 7:15am when you will receive your volunteer shirt. Kate Fisher-Shute is coordinating our members, so if you’re not participating in the event, please contact Kate asap at or 215-913-3449 to assist.
For other needed areas, see last week’s bulletin.
News from President Ray:
Why I Became RRCA State Rep:
PCVRC re-joined Road Runners Club of America three years ago as part of our plan to improve the club. See www.RRCA.org to see how its mission is similar to our own and to learn about their programs and initiatives. Basically, they promote running!
Since I’ve gotten more involved in running through the club and through my www.RunningMyRaces.com website, I accepted club member Tom Fort’s
invitation to become RRCA’s DE state representative. There are approximately seven RRCA member clubs/races in Delaware and my job is to be liaison with them and to recruit additional members. Each of our club members is an RRCA member through your membership in PCVRC. We get our insurance through them. Ask me questions anytime.
I’ll be attending RRCA’s national convention in Fredericksburg, VA over Delaware Marathon weekend where I’ll hope to learn more to help both our club and clubs/runners throughout the area. As always, I welcome you to consider how you can play a role in making PCVRC more beneficial to runners, even if it’s just inviting people to join us!
From the editor- Attention runners who are be going to the Broad Street Run Expo: I receive regular e-mails (ads) from National Running Center, which will be one of the vendors at the expos. The latest e-mail contains a series of discount coupons to be used at the expo. If you would like a copy of this ad to print out, reply to this bulletin and I’ll forward it to you.
University of Delaware Men’s XC & Track update
Good news on the issue of the University of Delaware’s decision to eliminate men’s cross country and track and field teams: The U. of DE has agreed to mediation with representatives of the men’s teams while facing a complaint of discrimination filed by the men with the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Dept. of Education. Mediation would allow the two parties to resolve the issue between themselves. If it fails, a final decision rests with the OCR.
Another possible contributing factor in the U. of DE’s acquiescence in agreeing to mediation may be the high amount of negative publicity its stonewalling has created. To see the latest story, go here:

Triple Crown
On Saturday, the next event in the MA-USATF Off-Road series, the Triple Crown 10K, will be held virtually in our back yard – at Carpenter State Park off Rt. 896, north of Newark. There will also be a marathon, half-marathon and 5K, also well as the “triple crown” – by participating in the half, 10K and 5K. Those running in the 10K can be secure in the knowledge that this writer will be responsible for placing a number of chalk marks, ribbons and flags so you won’t get lost – or at least you’ll know who to blame if you do.
Travel note: For those who are used to taking the back way from the Limestone Road area, Pleasant Hill Road, which links to Hopkin’s Bridge Rd., is closed. However, you can simply continue on Paper Mill to a right on Thompson’s Station Rd. to get to Hopkin’s Bridge Rd.
Running is Good
As the weather has turned warm and humid recently, you may find yourself struggling to acclimate yourself to the conditions. When you start questioning your sanity running in such weather, here’s some good news about running to help you feel better:
