MAKE $35 for running an hour during the week of Dec. 1:
We are still conducting treadmill run tests and plan to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
A ?new? compensation will take effect on Monday, November 24th and continue for the scope of our current testing. Versus trying to track runs by time in and time out we will be paying a flat fee of $35 per run including all prep time and follow up. Each run needs to consist of at least 55 ? 60 minutes of data on the Polar recording.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and we do still have slots available for the week of 12/1.

Weekend Marathon Events: Philadelphia & Rehoboth Recap
WEEKEND RUNNING: The past weekend saw unusually cold temperatures for Noveember and it presented problems for participants in both the Seashore Marathon events on Saturday and the Philadelphia Marathon events on Sunday.

This was the inaugural event for the Seashore Marathon, put on by the Rehoboth Running Company in Rehoboth, DE. General impressions were that the event was well done. Rehoboth still has numerous motels open and many restaurants for eating options. The course, which wound it's way from Rehoboth, up trails and newly constructed neighborhoods to Cape Henlopen State park in Lewes and then back, was great. The post-race party was excellent. One drawback was that the pre-race pasta dinner at the restaurant next door to the running store was only a plate of pasta with some rolls - not a good deal.

For some reason the timing chips were not handed out at the Friday pick-up. Instead, one had to get to the start to pick them up between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. I assume many runners drove there and then waited in their cars to stay warm. This writer stayed at the Avenue Inn, a block and a half from the start. Walking to the start at 5:30 a.m. gave me a chance to gauge the weather and I decided another layer was necessary. It was 27 degrees and somewhat breezy at the start. The first half mile was on the boardwalk, which retained a slippery coating of snow overnight. Snow and black ice were at some places on the course, but there was always someone to warn about the conditions.

After the start, the wind picked up and by the time we reached the half-marathon and relay hand-off point in Cape Henlopen, where it is usually windy anyway, the wind was blowing harder, This affected some people greatly and generally the second person on the relay teams had tougher conditions. These were one-in-a-generation conditions and I highly recommend this event.

CLUB RESULTS from the Seashore events:
Andy Jakubowitch was the second male marathoner with a 2:43:50.
His friend Spencer Shelly was the overall winner in 2:40:49.
Rich Syzmanski ran 3:42:17.
Mark Holliday ran 3:49:33, also a personal best, but he had hoped to knock a few more minutes off for a Boston qualifier.
Lori Culnane was disappointed with her 4:00:36, but she was first female 45-49.
Dave McCorquodale(me) set a PW(personal worst) with a 4:23:29. Like Lori's experience, the wind affected the hamstrings, forcing me into eventually alternating jogging and walking to keep from cramping.

In the marathon relay, David Farren ran a 1:33:35 as part of a coed team which finished 7th in 3:17:31.
Mary Holliday ran 1:46:25 as part of a female team which finished 3rd in 3:35:25.

In the Philadelphia Marathon races, the club had full teams for both the 8K and the Marathon for the MA-USATF competition. The age-graded results and final MA-USATF standing will be posted when I receive them.

Again the conditions were cold although not as windy as the day before. The race organization had apparently thought about the cold and did have some salt for the roads at the waterstops, but it wasn't enough as participants had to be warned about black ice and some people fell. This situation cost each runner a bit of time.

Another problem, that the race organization, which has desired to get so big, needs to address is coordinating with the Parking Authority and police to allow the runners more leeway in parking. For years some runners have parked on the grass at the exit to the Vine Street Expressway. It's out of the way and a convenient getaway. But this year, the police and parking authority decided to ticket every car that was parked there and other locations, including club members Mark Lozier and Claire Neilan. This is a sleazy way of the city getting some extra revenue. The race organization has not provided enough parking areas. Although there is supposed to be a free parking zone, it can't accommodate all the vehicles, leaving people desparate to pay $20 for parking, parking illegally, or facing the prospect of walking several miles after finishing a marathon to get back to their cars.

Marathon finishers:
Austin Gee - 2:49:19 PR BQ
Paul Schweizer - 3:24:05 BQ
Wes Stafford - 3:34:35 BQ
Scott Hodukavich - 3:43:02 PR
Mark Lozier - 3:44:19 BQ
Claire Neilan - 3:45:49 PR BQ
John Schultz - 5:41:44 (2nd Place 75-79) PW 40th marathon; ran Turkey Trot 5K and 10K the day before

Rothman 8K participants:
David James - 32:03 3rd 55-59
Dean Coffin - 32:44
Theresa Kauffman - 35:16 2nd 45-49
Bob Taggart - 36:45 1st 65-69
Deborah Compton - 38:37 3rd 60-64
Jerry Herman - 42:15
Rich Syzmanski - 42:28 ran Seashore Marathon the day before

Claire Neilan's account of the Phillie Marathon:
Well, what a day!! I had fun (especially once I finished!), so here's my recap:

I had a couple of things go wrong in the morning, which I took as a GOOD omen for my upcoming performance!!! (I learned that from Lori). I forgot my Goodwill jacket throw-away...brrr.... and also forgot to bring any cash. But, we got parked OK in our usual place, which I thought would be free (except I did come back to find we had a parking ticket!!!!!)

Made it my corral just in the nick of time, and we were off. The 3:50 pacer took off too fast, and so he slowed down at mile 3, at which point I kept on his original pace and realized if I stuck with that I would be on for a 3:44 ish. All was good, I got warmed up OK. The hills at Drexel, the zoo, and the park hurt my achilles and I was seriously doubting if I could hold the pace, but as soon as I got back on the flat on Kelly Drive the pain disappeared and I felt a good high coming on. I was so looking forward to seeing the Rebels at mile 18, and you did not disappoint!! It was great to see those hats!!!

Manayunk was awesome, lots of screaming spectators and lots of music. Oh, and I stopped for a beer at mile 19. Yum.

Then it was back towards the Rebs, and on to the finish. I definitely slowed down, but knew I could still qualify, but when I looked at my watch at mile 26 I nearly had a fit because I knew I only had seconds to spare. I literally sprinted. I have no idea how. But there was no way I had come this far and was not getting on that Boston bus!

Other highlights - seeing Austin go cruising past, hearing Adam yell encouragement at me, and seeing Shaggy looking good coming out of Manayunk. Not so nice highlights - seeing one girl totally wipe out on ice at a water stop, and having ice chips in my water. Oh, and coming back to a dead car battery!! But a kind policeman (not the one who gave me a ticket) helped me out with jumper cables.

So that's it. Major kudos to all other marathoners this weekend. Jim - holy crap, that was a fast run. Boston is most definitely in your future. And Scott, you had a major PR. Andy/Austin - waaayyyyy fast!!

Thanks to you all for showing up in the freezing cold...it truly is appreciated especially at that stage in the marathon.
