McCorq's Fun Run 5K Handicap Challenge
2008 McCorq's Fun Run 5K Handicap Challenge results
Twenty-five runners participated in McCorq's Fun Run 5K Handicap Challenge last evening(Aug. 28). This total is the highest number of participants of the six times the run has been held. But more importantly, Pike Creek Valley Running Club added seven new members as participants took advantage of the policy of allowing late year new members to sign up for $15. A couple of them actually gave more.
The race is handicapped, based on each runner's best personal 5K in the past year or, if not knowing a personal best, an estimated time. As is the usual case, the first female finisher(overall winner) and first male finisher had not done much racing and did not have a good idea of how well they could do. Samantha Jayasuriya's time was based on a trail 5K and Sujit Singh had not raced at all. Both are better than they knew, but the novice advantage is now gone since next year their times from McCorq's race can be used if they do not do other racing.
The course was changed this year to avoid milling around in front of neighbors' driveways. I didn't have a wheel to measure the course and estimated the new one. Since the top nine finishers ran their personal best of the year on what is not a personal best course, it is probably safe to say that the course is slightly short, perhaps 1/2 of a tenth of a mile.
The fastest finishers in actual running time were Andy Jakubowitch and Kelly Horowitz.
After the race, runners refueled on pizzas, salad, chips, cake, beers, water and soda. As is usual, everyone's a winner at McCorq's Fun Run. Everyone took home some fuel bars contributed by Ray Christensen from his vitamin and supplement business. Ray also contributed some supplements as prizes. Ralph McKinney contributed numerous prizes. Scott Hodukovich and several other folks chipped in prizes. And half a dozen folks took home the free humungous zuccini squash we offered. Samantha, as is the tradition, had her name added to the "terrible tee-shirt" of McCorq's Fun Run winners, which she is now obligated to return next year.
Fin = finishing order
Best = personal best in last year or estimate
Hdcp = handicap given to each runner, based on zero for people who had a 31:00 PB and who would start at 6:30; slower runners had a negative handicap and started before the "official" 6:30 start.
Actual = actual running time
H-time = handicap running time. Since the handicap was zero for a 31:00 estimate, anyone who ran under 31:00, ran faster than expected..
